The More Natural Tempurpedic

by Jason October 30th, 2007 - 15 Comments »

natural tempur pedicIt seems that people refer to us as, “Essentia..the natural Tempur-pedic mattress”.

So Essentia is the natural Tempur….. if that means an eco-friendly, non-toxic, 80% more breathable alternative to Tempur that’s more comfortable, i’ll take it. It’s fine by me. ;-)

Tempurpedic commercials and website scream green, natural, fresh and their’s nothing natural about a Tempurpedic mattress. Tempur material, like all other memory foams are made with petroleum. That’s a natural resource right?

btw, that’s what we laugh about in-house

Common complaints with Tempur mattresses include headaches, eye irritation, heat build-up, strong chemical odors / fumes / off gassing.

So if you’re interested in a natural, non-toxic mattress made with the only natural memory foam in the world, natural latex, organic essential oils and plant extracts check us out.

Our mattresses offer a supremely comfortable sleep, being natural is just a bonus.

Changing the way we Live

by Jason October 29th, 2007 - No Comments »

Back in April, Fortune Magazine had a feature on Pantagonia, the foremost leaders in eco-friendly outerwear and a responsible business headed by Yvon Chouinard. Now if you don’t know much about them you should definitely read what they’re all about.

This video is 30 minutes long but well worth it.

Anyways….. they’re goal is to have all their clothing made from recycled material that can also be recyclable by 2010. Not Bad.

Malachite Green in Canada

by Jason October 28th, 2007 - No Comments »

china-fish.jpgDid you watch W5 Safe to Eat? yesterday. Canada is increasingly consuming products that are made in China. Over 812 million pounds are imported from China every year.

Malachite Green is a chemical that prevents infections in crowded fish ponds. It’s also a carcinogen. The Chinese still use this chemical. So they choose the fish over us…real nice ;-)

Canada doesn’t allow food with Malachite Green to be sold. But test performed by W5 indicate there may be more inspections needed.

Made in Canada may not be Made in Canada.
Under Canadian law, the ingredients can come from anywhere in the world and still get a “Product of Canada” label. That’s because “Product of Canada” only means that at least 51 per cent of manufacturing costs were incurred in Canada. 8O

A Truly Made in Canada Mattress

by jack October 26th, 2007 - No Comments »

mattress made in canada

This morning on Canada AM there was a report on products made in China. They were referring to the fact that the governed quality standards are so low that you’re only protection is to buy made in Canada.

A guest speaker mentioned that that may not be a guarantee since according to Canadian laws, if a package (made in Canada) plus the cost of packaging in Canada represents more than the cost of the product inside (which may be from China) the seller of the product can label this made in Canada.

That is similar to what happens in the mattress industry. The big brands use components from China, assemble them here and call it made in Canada. I recently heard that Tempurpedic’s most expensive mattress has its cover manufactured in China.
made in canada
The Essentia products and all components are manufactured in Canada – NOT JUST ASSEMBLED !!!

Disposable Diapers that are Biodegradable!

by Jason October 24th, 2007 - 4 Comments »

wheat.jpgMontreal based Lysac Group Inc developed a new material that’s biodegradable and absorbent.

The new material will be used in diapers as of 2008. Traditional disposable diapers are made with oil-based polyacrylates. This new super absorbent material is made with wheat starch and is edible in small quantities. lol

They replaced the oil with something natural, similar to what we did with our natural memory foam. aaaa Very nice, high five.

A green diaper….it’s about time :D

Chemical Levels in our Children – CNN

by Jason October 23rd, 2007 - No Comments »

test-tube.jpgYesterday, CNN had a report on chemical exposure. Toxins are being found in record numbers in the bodies of our kids.

“We are the humans in a dangerous and unnatural experiment in the United States, and I think it’s unconscionable,” said Dr. Leo Trasande, assistant director of the Center for Children’s Health and the Environment at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.

Trasande says that industrial toxins could be leading to more childhood disease and disorders.

“We are in an epidemic of environmentally mediated disease among American children today,” he said. “Rates of asthma, childhood cancers, birth defects and developmental disorders have exponentially increased, and it can’t be explained by changes in the human genome. So what has changed? All the chemicals we’re being exposed to.”

Watch the CNN video

This is why our mattresses are made without glues and with toxic free fire retardants. Large mattress companies dont acknowledge and choose to ignore the risks involved.

When did being responsible become a minority affair?

The Wind Blows

by Jason October 21st, 2007 - No Comments »

I just came across this brilliant commercial on youtube.

Wanting to harness a little energy myself i did some research. Most municipal bylaws prevent people from putting a wind turbines on their properties. lol.

The Quebec government’s goal is to have 10 per cent of its energy derived from wind. I think the public is behind all efforts in moving towards renewal resources. It’s another step towards cleaning up the mess.

Find out how your country is doing on windfarms.

Protegez-Vous vs Mega Bloks

by Jason October 18th, 2007 - No Comments »

Protégez-VousQuebec consumer group, Protégez-Vous, releases a magazine about this time every year with a list of products that make or break their child safety toy standards.

Mega Brand, makers of Mega Bloks tried to prevent them from distributing a report finding lead content in 1 of their top products. This non-profit group released their magazine after successfully defending their findings in a court battle vs Mega Brand.

European standards tend to be a little higher than Canada’s and the U.S’s.

The same goes for mattresses. Many chemicals found in fire retardants and mattresses are banned in Europe but our governments continues to allow them.

We protect our children from poisons but we ignore products all around us with similar issues.

Where is our watchdog for everyday products? Yes there’s consumer reports but we need higher standards. I think that’s clear to everyone. The question is…would they be sued to high heaven? lol

Feeding off Aspiring Companies

by Jason October 11th, 2007 - 38 Comments »

Our recent press release resulted in some nice media coverage and interest. It also led some not-so-interesting requests.

The show was called Living in Style and the production company is East Shore Productions. According to them they contacted us to incorporate Essentia into one of their shows. Sounds interesting right?

Not so interesting when you see these examples:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8FV8WUMkkc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vceWDo0h5dg

Large broadcast corporation logos such as NBC, FOX, BET, ESPN2, A&E and Discovery etc are on their website.

They requested a small payment which was meant to demonstrate “our commitment” which we have elected to ignore.

They neglected to mention the show felt like an infomercial :-s

No thank you “Living in Style” ;-)
