Fredericton Residents High and Dry After Spill

by Angela October 31st, 2008 - No Comments »

Fredericton residents, including a senior taking care of her bedridden husband, are in shock after being left without any assistance after being told that they cannot use the water from their wells for any purpose at all, including bathing. 2700 litres of chromium trioxide was spilled at a business in the Evergreen Park area, Custom Machine and Hardchrome.

So far calls from the press to the local Department of Health have gone unanswered. The DOH simply issued a statement and some residents have been driving 45 kilometres to get their water from a spring.  Chromium trioxide is a known carcinogen and can also cause genetic defects.

Bolthouse Farms Goes Solar

by Angela October 30th, 2008 - No Comments »

Bolthouse Farms, purveyours of smoothies and salad dressings at fine grocery stores anywhere, have gone solar in a big way.  They announced the completion today of a 1.9 megawatt solar array that will power their farms in Palmdale, California.  The array incorporates 10,300 Mitsubishi solar panels on a new ground-mounted system that follows the sun during the day for greater efficiency.

The farm’s switch from diesel to solar powered irrigation pumps improves air quality and reduces noise.  The new array will provide 80% of the power needs of the large-scale farm operation.

Green Products Roundup

by Angela October 29th, 2008 - 1 Comment »

Burt’s Bees Grapefruit & Beet Conditioner

This conditioner lacks what so many other haircare products have – sodium laurel and sodium laureth sulfate.  These two products are irritants and being a dry skinned type that can’t afford irritating products in the winter, this product works great for me.  The citrusy smell makes it a great “wake up to me” product.

President’s Choice Green Coffee Filters

These coffee filters lack a very important ingredient – bleach.  Regular coffee filters are bleached to achieve that pristine white colour.  Bleach can irritate asthma and it goes without saying that its ingestion is unhealthy.  Plus, if you like the pricey coffees that I do, do you really want to add extra chemicals?  I didn’t think so.   Available in every shape and size – I get the basket kind, but the cone is pictured.

Make Your Own Laundry Detergent

Save some money and keep harmful chemicals away from your clothes and out of our water table.  Basic ingredients list for your own laundry detergent:

-1 cup soap flakes
-1/2 cup washing soda
-1/2 cup borax

Washing soda and borax are both available at your local grocery store.  To make soap flakes, go to the dollar store and get some cheap soap and a cheap food grater, if you don’t already have a second one you can use exclusively for this purpose.  Grate the soap.  1 bar will usually do one cup.  No packaging, no hidden chemical surprises, and no trouble.  You’re welcome.

McCain’s Record – 3 Strikes Against the Environment

by Angela October 28th, 2008 - No Comments »

Despite his desperation to distance himself from the Bush administration in the last few days of the presidential campaign, McCain’s record shows that he consistently voted with the Bush administration against a few key environmental policies:

Strike 1 – Corporate Polluters

Voted against making companies disclose pollution sites and making them pay for the cleanup of toxic waste Superfund sites, leaving taxpayers to pay for the cleanup.

Strike 2 – Drinking Water Pollution

Voted against a law requiring utilities to let consumers know what pollutants are in their drinking water.  He also voted against tightening the standard on arsenic in drinking water.

Strike 3 – Water Pollution by Mining and Oil Industries

Voted in 2002 to exempt the oil and gas industry from the Safe Drinking Water Act regulations, leaving them free to add chemicals like benzene to our water.  He also voted against tightening regulations on the discharge from hardrock water companies, which have already polluted 40% of the water table in the West.

Whenever it has been a case of the environment versus big corporations, McCain will vote for the corporations every time.  His record doesn’t lie.

This is Your Brain on the Internet

by Angela October 27th, 2008 - No Comments »

Gary Small, a neuroscientist at the University of California, argues that the internet is a lot more than just a communications medium.  It may be altering the way that we think on an evolutionary scale.  Internet searching and text messaging, according to small, makes the brain better at filtering information and instant decision making.

The people in the next generation who will be “on top” will be those who master technological skills as well as face to face skills.  In order to master them, Small argues that we do run the risk of losing human contact skills.

Oysters Enlisted to Clean Up Sewage In Rivers

by Angela October 26th, 2008 - No Comments »

Marine biologist Jeffrey Levinton started a trend last year when he dumped oysters into Jamaica Bay in New York to help clean up polluted water near John F. Kennedy National Airport.  While he is still awaiting data to find out how successful his project is, similar measures are being taken in
Massachusetts by the Massachusetts Oyster Project.

As long as they aren’t being released into an area where there is too much silt, oysters will consume bacteria and organic compounds that enter the rivers in heavily populated areas through sewage runoff.  Signs must also be posted near the areas where they have been released banning shellfishing, since oysters that are so employed may sport e. coli and salmonella contamination, among other things.  150,000 oysters were recently dumped into the area where the Charles river meets the ocean and sewage runs off frequently, polluting the scenic waters that Boston is traditionally known for.

McCain Campaign in Florida hires paid “volunteers”

by Angela October 25th, 2008 - No Comments »

Florida has traditionally been a key battleground state where every ballot counts.  Check out this video where a reporter from the Centre of Media and Democracy is investigating the McCain campaign and is told that they rely on volunteers – only to find out later that the volunteers are paid.  At that point a zealot comes out to violently threaten her with arrest.

This is also the most “Dugg” story on Digg today, not surprising given the treatment of the reporter.

California Wineries Bracing for Global Warming

by Angela October 24th, 2008 - No Comments »

Global warming won’t make the wine production of Napa and Sonoma Valleys go sideways if UC Davis has anything to say about it.  The Pacific Ocean has been warming up and cooling down California’s coast before global warming even came into focus as an issue.  Vinters have been adjusting their methods for years based on the unstable California climate.

However, if climate change produces a prolonged drought, there will have to be some major changes in which grapes are used in California wines.  They are exploring certain kinds of grapes at UC Davis that could replace Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays such as Spanish and Argentinian grapes that grow better in warmer climates.  They are also looking at moving to cooler climate areas and participating in water conservation programs.

Green Activists on US Terrorist List

by Angela October 23rd, 2008 - No Comments »

Josh Tulkin, Field Director of PowerVote and the Energy Action Coalition, was placed on a terrorist watch list by the United States government for a period of just over a year from 2005 to 2006.  He received a letter from the Superintendent of the Maryland State Police that offered to let him view his record before it was purged.

In the letter he was also told that he could only view his record alone without a lawyer present, and that he was not to be allowed to take a copy for his own files.  Please check out the story at the New York Times for more details and a video statement from Josh.

Please also see Powervote.org’s site for more information on how you can make a difference for the environment in the upcoming election.
