Obama Orders “Time-Out” on Road Construction Through National Forests

by freshfuzz May 30th, 2009 - No Comments »

Obama has put a stop to the abuse of the “roadless rule” that was supposed to limit road building through National Forests. Put in place under Clinton, the rule was quickly stepped all over by the Bush administration by allowing road-building to be mandated at the state level, ensuring that “Red States” didn’t really consider the environment when making their own rules.

Obama has allowed the Department of Agriculture to have oversight on roads that need to be built for essential purposes.  For more see the LA Times.

Wrap Me In Hemp and Call Me an Earth Bitch!

by freshfuzz May 29th, 2009 - No Comments »

Tara Lynn, owner of Earth Bitch, defines the term as:

Earth Bitch:  (urth bich) n. 1.  A woman that stands up for the earth and speaks out when others degrade or disrespect it’s features, creatures and resources. 2. A  brand name for wearable art jackets that are dedicated to the environment, one of a kind, contemporary and the ultimate eco-fashion statement.

Well, we like it. Better yet, if you feel the need to indulge in some non-conspicuous consumption to add to your wardrobe, her jacket designs will floor you with their originality. Tara also does hemp wedding gowns through Tara Lynne Studio. It doesn’t get earth bitchier than that.

Certification for Canadian Ecotourism On the Horizon

by freshfuzz May 28th, 2009 - No Comments »

YouTube Preview Image

In Canada, you will soon be able to stay at a properly rated “green” hotel. Canada’s tourism industry is striving to put together a form of licensing similar to LEED that will allow consumers to see how “green” a hotel actually is. The action is being taken in response to dubious claims in some sectors of the industry as to just how “green” a particular tourism operation is.

On Earth Day, the first meeting of the Canadian Sustainable Tourism Advisory Council met, and their first order of business was to establish these standards.  More over at Canada.com.

Join Your Local Community Supported Agriculture Group for Awesome Organic Local Food!

by freshfuzz May 27th, 2009 - No Comments »

If you live anywhere near farmland, chances are good that you can join a Community Supported Agriculture operation (or CSA) to get fresh, local vegetables during the growing season.  Some can be on the pricey side, but when stacked up against the cost of the same organic products purchased from the grocery store or your local health food centre, you’ll find the cost is roughly the same or cheaper.

A common objection to CSA’s is that you will get too much of the veggies that you don’t need, such as kale.  Most CSA’s let you pick and choose to a certain extent and some will even supplement your weekly share with organic fruits and veggies that they buy for you – a common feature for winter baskets shipped from CSA’s. For more on CSA’s check out the page over at the Green Guide.

United States
Local Harvest.org is a great source for finding your local CSA group.

The Biodynamic Farming and Gardening Association also maintains a list of CSA’s.

Canada

Ontario CSA’s can be found at the Ontario CSA Farm Directory.

North America

Eco Business Links has a whole pile of stuff on their CSA page. Farms in Canada, farms in the States, and other resources.

Happy Local Organic Eating!

Chicago Bans Bisphenol A In Children’s Products

by freshfuzz May 24th, 2009 - No Comments »

YouTube Preview Image

Chicago has become the first US city to ban the use of Bisphenol A in products made for children under three years of age, including sippy cups and bottles. As summer months approach, BPA poses more of a danger as it tends to leach into bottles when the plastic containing it is heated. Foods should never be microwaved in plastic containers as this produces the same result.

Minnesota has also banned the use of BPA in products for children.

You can read more about the dangers of BPA over at the Center for Health, Environment and Justice.

Join the Freecycling Phenomenon

by freshfuzz May 23rd, 2009 - No Comments »

YouTube Preview Image

Freecycling has actually become a verb within the last couple of years.  Its an easy concept – when you need something, you post a “wanted” ad on either the Freecycle site or the “Free” section of Craigslist.org.  If you want to get rid of something, you do the opposite.  The theory behind the site is to not throw out something that another person can use in order to cut down on waste.  Bonus:  you can get awesome free stuff.

Sign up with your local freecycle group at the website today.  If you’ll excuse me, I need to get rid of some computer speakers and pick up some summer clothes…

Proposed Fuel Economy Standards Draw Praise from Environmentalists and the Auto Industry

by freshfuzz May 22nd, 2009 - No Comments »

YouTube Preview Image

President Obama announced proposed overhauls to the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards this week. What does this mean? First, the fuel standards will be standardized, if you will, across the country, rather than a standard for California, a standard for 13 other states, and a standard for the rest of the country. This will lower production costs as all car companies will now be tooling for one standard instead of three.

The program seems to meet a happy median between environmentalists and the auto industry, depending on whose take you read.  For one point of view, see the New York Times.  Traditionally a conservative publication, the Times praises the new proposed regulations.

For opinion on the new standards, see The Huffington Post.
