Having An Environmentally Friendly Halloween With Some Common Sense Tips for Everyday Trick-Or-Treaters

by Angela October 31st, 2009 - No Comments »

greenpumpkin

The most die-hard Halloween fans plan so far in advance that a post on the day of doesn’t do them much good. For the rest of the world that has just started their Halloween preparations today, here’s a couple of tips to keep it eco:

1. Avoid Harsh Makeup and Chemicals
While a mask may not be the most environmentally friendly choice, it is better for your skin and health than a lot of the fake blood and other face paints that are on the market. Save it for a costume party or next year’s Halloween so that you can get maximum use out of it.

2. Choose Paper over Plastic in Packaging
If you can find candy that comes in individual cardboard or paper packaging rather than plastic, buy that instead.

3. Recycled Costumes over New
Come up with a costume idea that you can pick up at your local second hand store rather than buying a new costume. Where available at the last minute, opt for a costume rental if you want to get really fancy.

4. Use Grocery Bags as Trick-Or-Treat Bags
Way better than plastic, and they can generally hold more!

5. Encourage Healthy Eating
While it is inevitable that your little monsters will be bouncing off the walls into the wee hours of November 1st, dole out their candy in small batches supplemented with chopped veggies or fruits for after-school snacks throughout November. Don’t do this with older kids; you’ll just set off the horror of preteen rage if you try.

Above all, have a safe and healthy Halloween!!

Conservatives Not Up To Public’s Speed on Climate Change

by Angela October 30th, 2009 - No Comments »

canadian_flag
While this news is hardly a revelation, a poll has confirmed that Canada’s Conservative government is trailing on Canadian expectations for climate change legislation. In a two-to-one split, most Canadians agreed that the US and Canada had to set higher and harder targets for climate change. The poll was conducted by Canadian Press Harris-Decima.

Environment minister Jim Prentice offered a grim revelation at a climate change conference in Copenhagen this week:

“I have to take a realistic view that, given the amount of work that remains to be done, we’re running out of time,” Prentice told the Globe and Mail.

56% of Canadians polled didn’t believe that Canada was being aggressive enough on climate change.

Stock Up on Organic Moisturizer for Winter

by Angela October 29th, 2009 - 2 Comments »

Do you get chapped hands, lips, and skin tooling around on your skis or chipping the ice off of your windshield? Time to start stocking up on green moisturizers. Remember that there are “green” moisturizers, and then there are truly organically green moisturizers. Don’t buy anything with an “eth” in the ingredient, such as sodium laureth sulfate. Stay away from parabens as well. Check the label; even moisturizers from organic brands have the wrong stuff. Some “greener” brands to look at include:

Oliv’
This face cream has the ingredients you want, and none that you don’t want. Those with nut allergies may want to steer clear given the macadamia oil.

Juice Green Apple Antioxidant Moisturizer

This stuff gives your face some toxin-fighting abilities with powerful antioxidants and organic anti-aging compounds.

Kosmea

This Australian skin care company uses organic rose hip oil and shea butter to produce potions and lotions that do the trick. Friends have reported excellent results on both eczema and acne, and I have some of their rose hip oil that I use on my dry hands.

Toyota Creates New Flower Species to Offset Carbon

by Angela October 28th, 2009 - 1 Comment »

prius

Toyota has really kicked their green cred up a notch by developing flower species which specialize in offsetting carbon. These derivatives of the cherry sage and gardenia families will lower the surface temperature around the factory for the company’s popular hybrid, the Prius.

The Prius has drawn fire in the past for using more carbon dioxide in its production than standard, petroleum-based vehicles, a criticism that is blown away as soon as the low-emission vehicle hits the road. More on the new carbon-offsetting flower species at Autoblog Green.

White Vinegar : The Cheaper and Greener Household Cleaner

by Angela October 26th, 2009 - 2 Comments »

Back in the day, I used to counsel owners of composting toilets to use vinegar mixed with water to clean their composting toilets. Sometimes, I’d get an amazed call back saying that “it really worked well… I’m going to start using that tip everywhere else around the house.”

We are so conditioned to be good little consumers that we often hear such simple tips and scoff at them, thinking that such a simple solution can’t possibly disinfect the way that purpose-built cleaners can. There is also the viscosity problem; we like something that is a bit gunky so that it can coat the surface and “soak” the stain.

Try the experiment yourself for a week. Put undiluted white vinegar in one spray bottle, and hydrogen peroxide in another. Where you want to disinfect a surface, such as kitchen cutting boards or counters, squirt on some hydrogen peroxide after you have thoroughly cleaned the surface with vinegar. If there is no need to disinfect, straight vinegar will do.

This page gives you some great ideas on what else to do with vinegar, including using it as a fabric softener.

More Boys Being Born With Deformed Genitals: Alternet

We wrote about the documentary “The Disappearing Male” some time ago and have posted a permanent link in the right sidebar of this blog to it. If you haven’t watched it yet, we highly recommend doing so.

More data on the potentially damaging effects of endocrine disruptors and how to identify them has come to light in the past week. In this Alternet article, Joan Melcher not only goes into the various studies that have proven the effects of endocrine disruptors, but studies which have been trying to pinpoint exactly which chemicals and compounds cause problems genetically in lab animals. The results are promising; scientists may be able to determine the exact causes of genetic mutations that have had the following effects over the last century:

-one in 17 boys born in the United Kingdom have undescended testicles.
-the incidence of testicular cancer in young men has doubled every 25 years over the past 60 years.
-malformation of the penis has increased in incidence in some European countries, the United States and China

All bullet points are extracted from a study published in May 2009 by the British NGO Chemtrust.

Baby furniture is expensive enough that just a little extra digging can turn up more eco-friendly accoutrements for your little one’s nursery. Most new moms are really conscious about this stuff, as lead and other toxic compounds in everyday household items can potentially have an effect on the development of your child. Here are just a few spots to start if you are looking to build an organic nursery.

A Child Grows in Brooklyn
This site lists pretty much everything you need. From cribs made of wood harvested in Chile using sustainable forestry practices to wool carpeting, this site has already done the research that new moms are trying to do for themselves.

EcoBaby Mattresses
These mattresses are made from organic wool. While you’re at it, why not look at our own organic mattresses for your bedroom so that mom and baby can both sleep in organic luxury?

The Ultimate Green Store
While this online outlet has lots of other stuff, this page features Moses baskets (with real Moses?), toddler beds and eco-friendly organic cribs.

Calculating The Real Cost of Biofuels; Science Says they Aren’t Green

by Angela October 23rd, 2009 - No Comments »

New studies in the October 22 issue of Science show beyond the shadow of a doubt that biofuels are far from being green.

The first study, led by Jerry Melillo of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA, showed that greenhouse gas emissions would rise, not fall, with increased use of biofuels over the coming century. In the second study, researchers led by Tim Searchinger of Princeton University exposed a flaw in the calculation of the way that carbon emissions are calculated from biofuels under the Kyoto Protocol. The overwhelming message of both studies seems to be that global warming will be accelerated, not halted, with use of the new fuels.

Organic Maternity and Baby Lotions and Skincare

by Angela October 22nd, 2009 - 1 Comment »

Most families start thinking about organic products when they start expecting a new addition to the family. Organic maternity and baby products make great shower gifts.

Earth Mama Angel Baby Organics
At a recent show, I had the good fortune to run into a distributor for Earth Mama Angel Baby Organics. While the products are being marketed for mothers and babies, I can tell you that their moisturizing lotion was awesome no matter what side of the maternity ward you happen to be on. While most of their products sell quite well, their natural stretch mark oil tends to fly off the shelves.

Mambino Organics
This company also manufactures baby and mom products from organic and botanical ingredients.

Novena Maternity
This company offers vegan and organic maternity skincare products.

Essentia UK Launch

by Jason October 21st, 2009 - No Comments »

From left – Andrea, Jack, Ester, Eric

We don’t talk about ourselves very often in this blog but this is an exception.

Essentia UK is open for business!

The official launch was staged at the Decorex show in Chelsea, London. Interested European distributors were on hand to find out more about the best mattress in the world, and of course the world’s only natural memory foam.

The Swedes even paid us a visit. Tempur-Pedic, a popular memory foam brand, is from Sweden. They said “you know we have Tempur”….we said “ours is a little different”. So they tried, and they liked. Tempur is weak. It’s feeble. I think it’s time to put the hurt on Tempur as Kramer would say.

The UK sales office started operating as of August 1st 2009. The UK website is open for business and is transactional.

Our first UK store will be opened in January 2010 and 3 more will follow in 2010. Should be a blast.
