New studies in the October 22 issue of Science show beyond the shadow of a doubt that biofuels are far from being green.
The first study, led by Jerry Melillo of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA, showed that greenhouse gas emissions would rise, not fall, with increased use of biofuels over the coming century. In the second study, researchers led by Tim Searchinger of Princeton University exposed a flaw in the calculation of the way that carbon emissions are calculated from biofuels under the Kyoto Protocol. The overwhelming message of both studies seems to be that global warming will be accelerated, not halted, with use of the new fuels.
