Perfumes contain some of the worst chemicals that you could possibly put on your body. However, most of us persist in applying them because we want to smell like our favorite celebrity or idol. A recent article in November 2009 “O” magazine stopped just short of lambasting organic versus synthetic perfumes, while promoting them in the same breath. It had “change this, kind regards, -ed.” printed all over it.

Regrettably, perfume is just too big a business for any beauty magazine to write anything nasty about the stuff. If you still don’t want to toss your Chanel #5, have a look at some of the ingredients most frequently found in perfume. So; essential oils.

Organic essential oils have more staying power than organic perfumes and can be blended to create your own unique, personal scent. Here are just a few of the companies that sell them. You may want to dilute the oil slightly with water to avoid dermatitis, particularly if you are using a pure oil product.

Essential Aura
While the company focus is aromatherapy, their organic essential oils will do just fine for replacing your Eau de Chimiques.

New Directions Aromatics
QAI certified for quality, this company offers sandalwood, lavender, bergamot, and many other essential oils.

Pure Organic Essential Oils
Looking for something that you couldn’t find from the previous two companies? You’ll probably find it here. They even have Roman chamomile.
