Quebec Company Turns Leftovers into Fuel

by Angela February 28th, 2010 - No Comments »

Companies that recycle wood or other materials generally only use materials that meet certain criteria; the rest go in the garbage. Quebec company Enerkem takes these trash materials and turns them into ethanol, chemicals, and other materials. They have been successful enough to attract the attention of giant company Waste Management Inc., who have strategically invested in Enerkem in order to take advantage of their technology.

Instead of incinerating trash like most people do, Enerkem’s process requires no combustion or smokestack. Enerkem is based out of Montreal, with facilities operating in Quebec, Edmonton, and a new one planned in the US.

Eco-Friendly Cat Litter

by Angela February 27th, 2010 - No Comments »

Most of us use clumping or clay litter for our cats. Clay litter can be bad for cats, and both kinds just end up filling landfills without biodegrading. What can we use instead?

Some vets use wood pellets, just like the kind that you would use for a wood stove. These are cheap, at $5.00 for a thirty pound bag, and dissolve into sawdust. They even deodorize the litter to a certain extent; those of you who are rustic enough know that sawdust offers the same effect in an outhouse. This is the cheapest, most environmentally friendly way to go according to my research. I’m running out to get a bag today and I’ll let you all know how it goes! Here are some other products to consider.

Yesterday’s News
Purina has put out a product that recycles newspaper into kitty litter.

Cat Country

From Mountain Meadows, this stuff uses wheatgrass to make biodegradable kitty litter.

Nature’s Earth Feline Pine
This litter is made from wood, just like the wood pellets referenced above.

Toronto Hair Salon Goes Uber Green

by Angela February 24th, 2010 - No Comments »

worldSALON in Toronto was founded by Brian Phillips, a hairdresser on a mission to make the world a little better, one strand of hair at a time. After developing contact dermatitis in 1993, Phillips decided to stop doing perms. This prompted him to look at other aspects of his business and what they were doing to the environment.

Now, solar panels heat the salon’s water and worldSalon offers worldPRODUCTS for sale that are eco-friendly and effective. Halogen bulbs have been replaced by CFL bulbs, and computers are plugged into special power bars that cut the power when switched off at night. In 2007, Phillips received a certificate from the Ontario Power Generation confirming that he’d cut the energy use of the salon by half in a seven year time frame.

To find out more about the salon or purchase some of their products, visit their website.

Philips Exceeds Sustainability Targets and Reports 1/3 of Revenue from Green Products

by Angela February 22nd, 2010 - No Comments »

The next time you are trying to decide between two similar products, and one of them has “Philips” on it, choose Philips. The company just announced today that they smashed through their sustainability targets last year and generated almost a third of its revenue from green products in 2009, the year of the bad economy when no one was supposed to be paying attention to the environment.

It is also on target to spend $1 Billion on research and development into developing new, green technologies by the end of this year. Support their efforts with a toaster or something; GE sure isn’t making this kind of push.

US Wind Power Capability Tripled In New Estimate

by Angela February 21st, 2010 - 1 Comment »

A new estimate of the potential for wind power generated in the US has tripled previous numbers. The new study estimates that 37 million gigawatt hours per year could be generated by wind power in the US, which sails far beyond the previous 1993 estimate of about 10.7 million gigawatt hours per year.

The jump reflects the technological advances in wind power generation technology of the last decade. Wind speed increases with height, and turbines have been getting taller. More on the study, conducted by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and AWS Truewind, on the Wired website.

New Organic Milk Company Enters Market: MOOMilk

by Angela February 20th, 2010 - 1 Comment »

Consumers in northern Massachusetts, Maine, and New Hampshire will soon be able to purchase a new brand of organic milk homegrown in Maine. Maine’s Own Organic Milk, or MOOMilk for short, is produced by a small conglomerate of ten dairy producers in Maine.

The producers have been struggling and, in the words of one of them, probably would have gone out of business if it wasn’t for MOOMilk. They hope to become a regional player for consumers who want to buy organic and local. Sales of organic dairy products have risen quickly over the past few years. Organic milk is a top choice for many moms because of its lack of bovine growth hormones and antibiotics.

Yes. Yes you can. The great thing is, with the Simple Flush, you can now have a low flush toilet without installing an entirely new toilet. This is the most amazing thing that has ever happened to me. As you can imagine, I have a boring life.

It is $79.00, and you can buy it here. Save water, save money, save the environment. It installs in thirty minutes, and I don’t know how many of you have tried switching your toilet out but trust me, it ain’t pretty no matter what the end goal is. This is a simple adjustment to the tank.
