Indian “Organic Cotton” Contains GMO Cotton

by Angela February 7th, 2010 - No Comments »

A couple of weeks ago in the German Financial Times, a special investigative report into organic cotton coming out of India revealed that cotton sold for garments out of that country is actually genetically modified. Major retailers across Europe were affected by the news, and it is hard to imagine that the same GMO cotton isn’t making its way to North America as well.

India accounts for 65% of the organic cotton market. 30% of the organic cotton samples from India tested positive for strains of GM cotton at an independent testing laboratory in Germany. The scandal caught up to European textile industries, who have now been accused of being too lax in their monitoring and enforcement of their organic certifications.
