As the U.S. Senate prepares to vote on the fate of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline that would carry oil sands from Alberta to Texas, over 35 environmental groups have joined forces to create and promote an online petition to kill the project (already blocked once by Obama) once and for all.
According to Al Gore, in a blog post for the Climate Reality Project, “The EPA estimates that annual carbon pollution from the Keystone XL pipeline could be at least 82% higher than average crude refined in America – if not more.” Gore would rather see the U.S. work with Canada on the creation of new clean energy and energy efficiency than bring in a pipeline that would add the equivalent carbon footprint of 4.8 million more cars on the roads.
Environmental groups including the Climate Reality Project, 350.org, MoveOn, League of Conservation Voters, Patagonia, Sierra Club, Energy Action Coalition and others have all come together in an attempt to garner more than 500,000 signatures protesting the proposed pipeline. Americans and concerned world citizens can sign the petition here and add their voices to those saying NO to the Keystone XL pipeline.
