Everyone’s done it; they wake up crusty eyed and half asleep, look at the clock and panic because they’re late. Today, millions shared that feeling as they gazed at their clocks that were exactly an hour ahead. At 2am this morning, we had to say goodbye to daylight savings and welcome the cold dark months ahead.

I phone 4 and 5 users were safe; that is until they stepped into their cars or looked at their ovens. This is the first year I was in shock. I jumped out of bed thinking I had only 10 minutes to get ready and speed to work, but to my surprise my phone reassured me I still had more time to sleep.

With long days behind us, daylight savings will be remembered in our extra hour of sleep. As darkness comes upon us earlier in the day, we have to be reminded of all of the wonderful winter holidays ahead of us! Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years are all upon us.

My question to everyone out there is “ Did you remember to set your clocks back? Or did you wake up in a panic that you were an hour late?”

As their name implies, Oasis for Girls is source of inspiration, a sanctuary, and an invaluable place of learning for teenaged girls of the bay area. Located in the heart of the SOMA District of San Francisco, Oasis for Girls has been striving to enrich the lives, and empower the young women taking part in their programs, for the last 13 years. Through a comprehensive, three course curriculum addressing the major issues and struggles facing inner city girls, Oasis for Girls does a wonderful job of providing the guidance, caring and support, so vital to making the difficult transition from youth to young adulthood.

Oasis for Girls offers three, ten week courses, each designed to help cultivate a distinct area of knowledge and creativity. All programs are free of cost, in fact providing a stipend to the participants. Girls who complete all three courses are dubbed “Oasis Divas”, with an opportunity to become a youth staff member and help the girls of the future.

In the Arts and Education Program, where the girls explore their creativity through various activities of writing, painting, dancing and more. In the Life Skills Program, taught by Megan Hamilton (Quite literally the sweetest woman I’ve ever met), the young ladies learn about and discuss many social and cultural issues ( healthy relationships, drug abuse, positive body image) which can present themselves as huge pitfalls when left unexamined. Through presentations, field-trips and discussion, the girls are able to enlighten themselves on tough issues that can be completely overlooked and neglected. The Technology and Leadership Program teaches skills necessary to integrating into the workforce and higher education, such as resume building, computer skills, interviewing, and applying to college.

I know what your thinking “but Jeremy TV still teaches you things” and you are right to an extent, there’s The History Channel, Animal Planet, The Science Channel etc. But what I mean is TV used to teach you to be a good person. Shoot even in school they taught us how to be nice to one another and use our imaginations and such (sadly no longer the case). Oh sure you can watch a show about the worlds deadliest gerbil, or the most powerful bomb ever made, or the worlds largest tamale, or blah blah blah I get it, information flows freely. The point i’m getting at is sometimes you watched something that just made you feel good about being human or your fellow humans. Well for those of you who miss that feeling heres a few videos to cheer you up!

Remember happy little clouds? Happy little trees?

Remember using your imagination? Cause you had no X-box or Iphone?

Remember when you could eat a home cooked meal and no one mentioned calories? Well I do, right now i’m imagining myself painting a picture of happy little hot chocolate truffles!

PBS really gave us a great start and a healthy imagination!

SPOILER ALERT!!!

So, I just finished Little Bee… Eh. I dunno, it seems like the tag “#1 New York Times Bestseller” may mean “This book is so simple and accessible, there isn’t a chance in hell it will go down as any sort of literary masterpiece”. Personally, when I can read a book cover to cover, and never once have to go to a dictionary, its a let down. Its hard to stay interested when the words aren’t magical and the rhythm isn’t special. By the end of the book, I felt it was very ordinary writing of over-the-top traumatic events. I suppose, without the extraordinary crisis, there would be nothing to keep your interest. Great writing can make the most mundane events seem fantastic. I think Little Bee does the opposite: It turns amazing events bland.

So, Little Bee is a story about a teenage refugee girl from Nigeria and a mother in crisis from England, and how their lives collide through a remarkable encounter. The story is written by Chris Cleave, a very white man from Oxford, who is neither a Nigerian girl or an English woman, which is blatant in his narration of both. each chapter alternates telling the same story from each character’s perspective, neither sounding authentic, or even very different from each other.

Little Bee is the name of the Nigerian girl, who is constantly explaining the differences between her Nigerian roots and life in England in a very matter of fact, yet obviously sympathy inducing way. Its really annoying. It never feels like a young African girl is talking, it always reeks of a privileged white man’s ideal of what she might feel like, with a Noble Savage tinge the entire way through. I got this huge impression of the author trying to be cool, trying to prove he understands the plight of children from impoverished, war-torn countries, constantly showing he has no idea what he’s talking about.

Sarah is the English mother, who I found to be a completely unsympathetic character. After a while, I quit trying to understand her, because she’s being portrayed as a noble, complex character, but with no depth or truly redeeming qualities to find. Also, I’d guess by the narration of Sarah that the author cheats on his wife. I have no proof, but its very hard to think otherwise…

In the end, a disappointment. Sub-par. The book has every major trauma a person could find in life: Murder, suicide, adultery, imprisonment… but, all the events just come and go. Nothing memorable, its like a police report. In the end, I don’t even know what these characters are supposed to look like- in 267 pages, he couldn’t find time to describe any of them in any detail. I’m pretty sure most of the people who find this entertaining simply have no experience with trauma, and so, just find the spectacle juicy. Big time bummer.

A discussion of the most importante question of our age, Who would win in a fight HULK Vs Superman

The post HULK Vs Superman: Who Would Win? appeared first on .

So in the midst of of all the recent political tension surrounding the upcoming presidential election a lot of issues are being hotly debated….But not the ones that matter! Like for instants Who would win in a fight, HULK or Superman. If a candidate adequately answered that question it would decide my vote pure and simple even though I know the answer. Who you think would win says a lot about you as a person by the way, lets take a close look at the opponents. You have Superman who’s powers include extreme speed, ice breath, laser vision (not Lasik his eyes work fine even though Clark Kent does wear glasses), super strength, x-ray vision, the ability to fly, good looks, nice job, cute girlfriend, stupid out fit, and a general elitist attitude…. OK some of those aren’t powers but you get the point. He derives his super power from the earths sun and sorta recharges like a battery when harmed. His weaknesses are kryptonite which negates his power, or simply being shamelessly beaten down faster than the sun can recharge him, clearly no easy feat.

OK so I would like to point out that Superman’s strength and speed seems to change all the time as is true with most comic book heroes HULK included so no point in mentioning it. Its a battle of will. For a complete list of HULK’s strengths click here because chances are your underestimating him.

Ok now lets take a look at HULK. He is a mild mannered genius geneticist who is essentially homeless most of the time from living on the run from the government (it’s not easy being green) . The reason for this is one of his genius experiments with gamma radiation turned him into a large nearly invincible beast who possesses super strength and a really bad attitude. The catch is you have to make him angry to turn him into the HULK ( I think one look at superman’s cape would do the trick).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xsGZckJVTw&feature=related

His strength varies due to how p!ssed off he is, which is “very” when someone is beating him, which is why he really just doesn’t lose fights…Even with gods, watch as he demonstrates this on Loki (a god from val halla).

So basically what i’m getting at is that HULK would beat up Superman. He is the arrogance equalizer of elitist tough guys. Any time some clown in a cape comes along and thinks he’s the greatest thing since sliced bacon HULK puts a green fist in his breadbox. Good luck Superman, call Loki before the fight for some what not to do advice…..Oh and Obama, Romney, I wish to hear your thoughts on this before I vote.

Well, would you look at Freddy Frown-Face over here? Is that a face only a mother could love, or what? “Oh, whoa is me. I’m just a fat, lil blob, floatin’ through the sea. I got no friends, nobody cares for me. I think I’ll eat some gunk…”

Click here to view the embedded video.

This is the Blobfish, maybe the most pathetic looking creature on earth. Style, grace and keeping up appearances are not what he’s all about. If you’re looking for a dynamic physique, wisdom of the forests, supernatural awareness… Look elsewhere. the Blobfish lives thousands of feet below the surface, where the pressure would crush you like a tube of toothpaste. Perhaps, down there, he’s not such an unattractive mush. Surprise: He’s not the most mobile fish in the sea. He basically sits around and eats whatever floats in front of him.

So, to answer your question- What do you get when you throw a creature thousands of feet under perpetually darkness, and don’t demand any exercise, or movement in any way?? You get this, the Blobfish, the sadist sack in the sea.

Romance is dead, right? Remember the days of chivalry; of honor and common decency? Remember how you used to hop out of bed before the sun rose, sip tea while your manservant dressed you in your favorite paisley waistcoat and finest Autumn tweeds, as you rushed out the front door, constantly checking your pocket watch, so as not to be late to the train station. The only time you’d have to spare would be a moment at the baker’s to pick up a basket of sweet buns for friendly maid Jessica at the end of the lane, and a moment with the flower girl, to purchase the finest dozen roses for your lovely lass.

Yes, there was a time when class reigned supreme. What’s that, you say? “Oh, but I’m worthless! A waste of space! I wouldn’t know culture or nobility if it played halftime at the Super bowl! I’m not very smart, I read at a 5th grade level, and my character is highly questionable…”

That’s OK! Sure, history probably won’t remember you as a great man, or even a good man. You will, most likely, be remembered as a very despicable man… But, you can do at least one thing, for yourself and your loved ones, that may fool the unknowing eye into thinking you are to the manor born:

Commissioning art!!

Oh, the joy I felt when first I saw Siren Girl, a portrait of me ‘n Megan, just completed by Dante Orpilla, www.theartofdante.com, a fantastic young artist, currently in Southern California (but serving anywhere, we’re in Northern California-just sent him a photo)

What I really love is the video that goes along with the painting. Its great to see not just the final product, but the process too. Watching the painting rise off of the blank page is very cool. Dante crafted a unique musical score and posted the video to youtube, so, now I can watch it anywhere, anytime.

This was an extremely satisfying purchase, and I really look forward to having Dante create more for me. So, what are you waiting for?!? Put down that camera, portraits aren’t just for kings and popes, inject a lil art into your life!

Ahh poor lonesome george, This was the rarest living thing on earth. Lonesome george was last specimen of the Galapagos pinta island tortoise and recently died on July 24 2012 found by by his caretaker of 40 years. He was believed to be over 100 years old. He simply died of heart failure due to old age. In his younger days in the seventies George was penned with two females of a different subspecies. Although eggs were produced, none hatched. thus his species was pronounced officially extinct during his lifetime, though now alas it is finally true. So long George Hopefully you are carousing with some ex girlfriends in that big tortious shell in the sky!!!

A review of Maria Bamford's performance At Cobb's Comedy Club in San Francisco October 18th 2012. WONDERFUL!!!

The post Review: Maria Bamford, Live at Cobb’s in San Francisco appeared first on .

We had the greatest time last night! I’ve never been to an A List comedy act before. I have seen an amatuer act, which was so horrendous its not worth mentioning. I love good standup though, so, when I saw that Maria Bamford was playing at Cobb’s Comedy Club in San Francisco for 2 days (October 17th and 18th) I figured it would be the perfect opportunity to break the ice. Maria Bamford has been a favorite of mine, and my girlfriend, for a long time, and she didn’t disappoint at all. She was wonderful, brilliant. She had the full room in stitches for over an hour, and provided one of the more memoral nights of live entertainment I’ve had in a long time. I even stood in line for her autograph after the show, and I haven’t asked for an autograph in 20 years!

Click here to view the embedded video.

We arrived at Cobb’s around 7:30, about a half hour before showtime. The place is clean, with modern, dimly lit decor and friendly staff. Megan was starving, so we got a cheeseburger and garlic fries. She liked the burger a lot, and that’s saying something- she kinda considers herself a harsh burger critic. The burger was “juicy and tasty”. There’s a 2 drink minimum , so, we started with some kinda blue/tropical concoction, then switched to double whiskeys for the remainder of the night. The whiskeys were $16.95 a pop, so, I dunno, maybe you wanna bring a flask, but don’t tell them I told you to. We ended up in the balcony, which i was weary of at first, because my eyesights not so good. But, once we got there, i prefered our view much more than on the floor. It felt so intimate! I love how close you are, everybody in the place has a good view and can hear everything, its quite different from many musical shows, where even at a small show you can feel distant.

Click here to view the embedded video.

The opening act was Sean Keene, who I guess is local. He was really funny. When he went into a bit about how he doesn’t get sports, Megan was holding on for dear life. In talking about Tim Tebow, he said “When he makes football, or whatever he does” just perfectly. The crowd enjoyed him a lot. Like Maria Bamford, he’s smart, and his act was witty.

Maria came on a lil before 9 PM, and killed it. Her commentary, often times revolving around her awkwardness, was deep and thoughtful, in the most hysterically absurd delivery. She’s a master of voices, doing voiceover jobs on some cartoons, and the speed with which she changes voice and character is amazing. Its like you’re watching more one performer, the way she’s able to converse with herself.

Click here to view the embedded video.

I don’t know how much she tailored her act to the San Francisco crowd, but it went over perfectly. She bounced from topics like over-concsious hipsters to excercising emotional intelligence on liquor store cashiers, to being a youth mentor in her neighborhood without telling anybody. It seems the best comics are always somewhat a tortured soul. Mid way through her act, she brought in that she’s bi polar. She’s also brilliant, and her show was such a treat, there is no way I’m going to miss the next time she’s in town. This is a fan club type situation.

Also, just in general, I discovered I love live comedy! Cobb’s was great, and they get A list performers, so I’m sure I’ll be back, and look forward to checking out some of the other clubs. Checkin’ my radar for when Louis CK and Bill Burr come to town!

This friday right here in Berkeley at the Greek theatre none other than Bob Dylan And Mark Knopfler are coming to the bay to rock the house! Some of you are probably saying “who the heck isMark Knopfler?” well he is best known as the guitarist of Dire Straights, you know-”money for nuthin and chicks for free“, “Sultans Of Swing“, and “Tunnel Of Love“,though he has long since pursued a successful solo career. As for Bob he probably needs no introduction but just in case you’ve been living in a cave for nearly 50 years he is widely considered the most influential American songwriter of our age. Some of Bobs most notable songs include ” Like A Rolling Stone“, “A Hard Rains a-gonna Fall“, and “Tangled Up In Blue“. This is a must see duo, one of the worlds greatest guitarist and greatest songwriter/vocalist at one show. It’s gonna be EPIC!!!
