Healthy And Easy Cooking For Losing Weight – Day 1

by Adam March 27th, 2012 - No Comments »

If you have been following this blog, you will remember that in the start of year I was hoping to lose some weight and get in shape.  I had joined a Crossfit box, and was really enjoying it.  Well as was destined to happen, life got in they way, and after about a month I wasn’t able to drop the $150 a month nor the time to get my WOD on.

Recently I decided that I was going to try and drop as much weight as I could, as quickly as I could.  The best way I know how to do that is to kick the carbs, and drop the calories.  So with a meal plan consisting of primarily egg whites, tomatos, chicken, asparagus, and protein shakes, I am happy to say I dropped 20 lbs and 2 pant sizes in the last 30 days.  I also hit the gym 25 of those 30 days for an hour and a half spread across the treadmill, stairmaster, and rowing machine.

It was a lot of hard work, but now it is time to maintain that loss.  With that said, now the calories go back up, and the carbs are re introduced.  Obviously I can’t go back to the Jack in the Box or McDonald’s meal plans I was on before, but I can’t just eat boneless skinless chicken breast and broccoli for the rest of my life.

This is where leanbodylifestyle.blogspot.com comes in.  The creator of the site, Michael, is a genius in the kitchen.  He has over 200 recipes on his site and they are all pretty much using the same 10 or so healthy ingredients.   I am going to highlight my favorite recipes here for the next few days.  I would encourage you to check out his site, and even subscribe to his youtube channel.

Let me know if you try the recipes, and which are your favorites!

Drive Your Car – Change The World!

by Adam March 6th, 2012 - No Comments »

When I think of cross country driving in a 1994 Toyota Tercel,  my mind immediately pictures something similar to the photo above.  Despite its age, one engineering professor based out of Tennessee has fitted hydrogen and E95 tanks to the trusty Tercel to make a drive from Georgia to California.  His goal is to reach the coast on just 10 gallons of gas.  While the current model year Toyota Corolla would require just over 74 gallons to make the same trip.

Professor Cliff Rickets is less concerned about the environment and more concerned about our pocket books should there be another oil price spike like there was back in 1979. With prices huddling around $4 per gallon, a crisis with the same magnitude would hurdle prices in excess of $12 per gallon, and leaving most of us thinking… “Rugh Rogh!”

So rather than just sit around and wonder if something would work, the professor is taking action.  You can follow Professor Rickets and his crew on their journey by checking out the Middle Tennessee State University website here.

Upon successful completion of this journey, and no assassination attempts by big oil, this crew could prove that we can make a viable change for the better, we just have to want to.  The conversion can be done on pretty much any car for around $5500k dollars, and you may even save that in your gas bill the first year depending on your driving habits.

Would you make the switch?

Police Officer Not In Top 10

by Adam March 3rd, 2012 - No Comments »

A lot of folks out there would probably say that Police Officer is a very dangerous job.  They would be very right, but according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Police Officer’s, aren’t even in the top 10 most dangerous.  That’s right folks, if you are considering a job with your local PD, or even want to go big or go home with a career in the FBI, you are safer (much safer) than your average fisherman.

I want to reiterate that I am not saying that Police Officer’s don’t have a dangerous job, they absolutely do, but their lower than expected fatality rate is a true testament to their advanced and arduous training.  For example, the California Highway Patrol estimates that it costs $100,000 per cadet that goes through their 27 week academy.  That is just where the training begins, don’t forget about working with an FTO (Field Training Officer) in the field after the academy for 3-4 months.

So if you know someone who has a passion for public service, you can now feel better about encouraging them to follow their passion, and make it a career.  We need good officers to keep us safe, and I thank each and every officer for putting their lives in danger each day to ensure everyone’s safety.

JK Just Changed It All – Hollywood Isn’t Safe

by Adam February 28th, 2012 - No Comments »

I am big fan of sitting on my couch, throwing a Blue Ray in the PS3, and letting the Plasma and surround sound make my evening.  Thanks to my blockbuster movie pass, I grabbed three new movies the other day, and my wife and I watched “My Idiot Brother” just last night.

While I would say this was a pretty good comedy flick, it was missing explosions, drama, a spy, a wedding, and much much more to get everything I like in a movie.  So if you would like to watch a movie with every genre of movie, then Jimmy Kimmel’s “Movie : The Movie” is the ticket.

The trailer is 9 minutes long, how can you not love this movie?

Ball + Tazer = Greatest Day of Your Life!

Today is the greatest day of your life, because today you found out that there is such a thing as Ultimate Tazerball.  What is Ultimate Tazerball you ask?  Well that is the most amazing question I have ever heard, and better yet, it comes with an even more amazing answer.  Ultimate Tazerball is where stupidity meets boredom.  Ultimate Tazerball is where humans take a practical device used by peace officers to save lives and prevent injury, and begin to willingly electrocute each other as they chase one another around in a confined area.  Yes, I just said that.

If you watch the video above, you can clearly see the talent they are utilizing to fill the team rosters are the crem de la crem of society.  My favorite part of the informative video above has to be when Jason Bornstein states, “It hurts man, it doesn’t feel good.”  Really?  It hurts?

This sport was actually invented in Canada, but it is illegal to play there, so the next live match is in Bangkok, Thailand.  You can check out the official website that currently has 779 amazing facebook fans by clicking here.  With only four teams at the moment we won’t be seeing this on ESPN any time soon, but ESPN 18, you never know.

Would you par take in Ultimate Tazerball?

Oh Hellz Nah! – World’s Largest Rope Swing

by Adam February 23rd, 2012 - No Comments »

In another life I was a risk manager for a hedge fund.  At the fund we used options to hedge our stock position, and when the stock would drop, we would use the profits made on the hedge to reinvest and grow the position organically.  My function at the hedge fund was to know exactly, to the penny, how much was at risk at any given moment.  With normal IV levels, we would maintain less than 10% of the account at risk at any one time.

For someone to be attracted to a job like that, these qualities have to be passed onto other aspects of daily life.  At least that is the case for me.  When I look at a potential recreational activity in my daily life, I really like to weigh the risk vs. reward, and come to a conclusion that has the best rate of return.  In the case of this rope swing, the risk is ending up very dead, or at the least very broken.  The reward is, well, what is the reward?  With that said, it seems like 100% of my account (my body) would be at risk.  This makes the world’s largest rope swing, a cut and dry, oh hellz nah!

I will say it makes for a pretty cool video.  What do you think, would you take on the world’s largest rope swing?

Bay Area Computer Recycling Centers

by Adam February 21st, 2012 - No Comments »

Instead of throwing your old computer through a window after it has booted up for its final time, hopefully you are aware that there are better places than others to put your old computer when it is laid to rest.  While you may have the strange desire to jump up and down on it, which will now be easier as your wallet is suddenly lighter from buying a new one, trashing your computer isn’t very eco friendly.

You not only can help the planet, but some recyclers will even pay you for it.  Generally these recyclers are paying you by the weight, so you more than likely won’t get enough to cover the gas it took to drive you there in the first place, but you can still be happy it will be disposed of properly.

Here is a great site where you can find E-Waste Reycylers and places to donate old electronics in the Bay Area.

Bay Bridge Takes President’s Day Weekend Off

by Adam February 11th, 2012 - No Comments »

If you are in the East Bay on President’s Day weekend, and want to drive to San Francisco, you are gonna have to fill up the tank before you get on the freeway.  Unfortunately the Bay Bridge is being shut down for the latest and greatest repairs at 8pm on February 17th and re-opening at 5am on Tuesday February 21st.  This means 3.5 days of driving south to the San Mateo bridge if you have to take your car.

On the flip side their could be a weather issue.  It seems the repair they are making this go round requires good weather, so the closure could be cancelled if mother nature doesn’t cooperate.  All you need to do is to check out  http://baybridgeinfo.org/.  on the 17th to see if they are still on schedule.  If all goes well, and the rain clouds don’t show their faces, I will see you in traffic on Monday morning!

Tesla Model X – Putting the E in SUV

by Adam February 10th, 2012 - No Comments »

The Tesla Model X has arrived, and she is perdy!  Of course, by arrived I mean, they drew pictures of it and put it on their website…  Well that is pretty much all that Tesla does, right?  Hopefully some day they will actually have cars for people to take home with them, and when they do….they is gonna be mazing!

The big advantage of going with Tesla over your average Toyota, is obviously the 0 emissions and the lack of trips to the gas station.  This may be the reason for going with Tesla for most, but I think for me, it’s how they do EVERYTHING differently than the major brands.  They are a company of innovation, coming up with solutions to problems the major car manufacturers care not to solve.

Take for instance their awesome solution to getting in the car.  Rather than just having a door, like every other car company, Tesla decided bird wings would be better.  Check out the awesome gull wing style doors that make it super easy to get to the third row seat.  How about the awesome 17 inch touchscreen monitor that operates all of the functions of the car?  The Tesla designers are truly embracing their Trekkie status, and bringing us right along to “Where no one has gone before!”
