Jogging Leads To Bad Science!!

by Adam May 7th, 2012 - No Comments »

Who knew that a study on jogging would result in my first aneurism?  I was intrigued by the headline “Jogging boosts lifespan up to six years, study shows,” so naturally I let my mouse “jog’ its way over the hyperlink and click on the story.  After some cursory reading, it became apparent that I had been bamboozled!

The conclusion is described accurately in the headline, but the quality of the science is rather unsettling.  It would seam that the “researchers” in 1976 put together a pool of 20k people, and identified around 2k of them to be “joggers.”  Then while controlling for nothing else than the fact that they jogged, they came to the conclusion that jogging can add up to six years to your life.

I will be the first to say that I wasn’t the best in science class, but this is just sad.  Someone paid these jokers to do a 25 year study and this is what they got?  How can you come to that conclusion?  Shouldn’t there be more variables?  For example, I know that when I am feeling extra exercisy (its a word), I tend to eat better too.  Wouldn’t it be fair to suggest that these so called “joggers” might have eaten differently than the non joggers?

Well, we will never know, because, hey, just do some jogging at some point in your life, and you will live up to six years longer… Kapeesh?  Me Neither…

Break The Habit Or Uncle Sam Will Do It For You!

by Adam January 10th, 2012 - No Comments »

Have you ever wondered why you crave sweets at night, or why you have to get a hot dog every time you hit the A’s game?  Or better yet, have you ever wondered why you can’t stop craving sweets at night, and why if you don’t get that hot dog your fingernails are much shorter when leaving the stadium?
You happen to be in luck!  Apparently millions of dollars are being burned to find out why you have a will-power problem.  Apparently knowing that dopamine in your brain, is the root cause of your urges and splurges is well worth the money to the National Institutes of Health.
Now there has to be light at the end of this tunnel, or why would we be spending so much time and energy on it?  The complicated answer is Drugs, and the simplified answer is Money.  This research is the stepping stone to the future that will create drugs to disrupt your currently hard-wired behaviors and allow you to more easily instill new ones.
So if you are unable to break a bad habit, don’t worry it isn’t your fault, it’s your brain’s fault.  All you have to do is wait a few more years and you will be able to buy a drug that will fix it all.   Check out the article yourself and see where your (I mean Uncle Sam’s) dollars are going!

The EPA Doesn’t Care If You Have a Job!

This incredibly uncomfortable interrogation by U.S. Rep. Cory Gardner is a prime example of the incompetence in our government.  There are so many branches doing so many things, that those in charge of making the decisions that ultimately shape our rules and regulations are clueless.

It would seem that the EPA isn’t looking at all of the economic information, but it is also clear that congress isn’t requiring the EPA to consider all of the economic information.  So this means we get to watch interviews like this, and nothing gets done…  Yay, go America!
