Even though the idea behind the Energy Star initiative was a good one, it is turning into a system that is being gamed by major appliance manufacturers.  No independent audits are done of the companies involved, and recently it was discovered that LG and Samsung both put out Energy Star rated fridges that only performed to Energy Star standards if their icemaking function was off.
