Google is developing software called Google PowerMeter that will interact with your power company’s “smart meter” to show you exactly where you can cut back on your energy use. Users will be able to monitor their power through their iGoogle homepage and on their web-enabled devices.
Google has been trying to force energy suppliers to share more information with their customers so that everyone has a more detailed picture of their home energy use. No date is given for the release of the software. Those wishing to see more detail can check it out over at Google’s page on the subject.
Ed Lu, a member of Google’s engineering team, wrote on Google’s blog that:
“It may not sound like much, but if half of America’s households cut their energy demand by 10 per cent, it would be the equivalent of taking eight million cars off the road.”
