Eco-Friendly vs Natural Mattresses

natural mattress

You spend A LOT of time on a mattress. Your nose inches away from it. But what is in IT?

Most mattresses are composed of some pretty unhealthy stuff. Toxic foams, harsh glues, industrial perfumes and chemically treated fabrics which all offgass…some for years.

They’re designed to be cheap and comfortable, health is not a factor.

Most mattresses are made from 100% synthetic materials (petroleum based foams, polyesters etc). Popular memory foam mattresses have been know to emit up to 61 chemicals, including the carcinogens benzene and naphthalene. Many chemicals are found in our blood, linked to reproductive issues and found in breast milk.

Eco-friendly mattresses, natural mattresses and organic mattresses are becoming very popular because of this. People are beginning to realize that our surroundings are contributing to the illnesses epidemic.

What’s an Eco-Friendly Mattress?

An Eco mattress can mean 5%-15% less petroleum. To some that’s an eco-friendly mattress. To others it’s hardly relevant. Kinda like concentrated detergents. What a load!!!! You’re still poring nasty chemicals into the water system but the container is 50% smaller La Dee Da ;) . Eco-friendly means better for the environment but to what degree? And does it mean healthy?

When it comes to mattresses eco-friendly is just not good enough.

What’s a Natural Mattress?
A natural mattress is the way to go. Healthy, natural, non-toxic mattresses are made from natural materials like natural latex foam (foam made from rubber tree sap), organic fabrics and materials. They range from $800-$6000 and are often biodegradable.

The most popular natural mattresses are latex mattresses. They’ve been around for 50 years. I’ve spoken to people who’ve been sleeping on the same latex mattress for 25 years. Durable, comfortable, healthy and truly eco-friendly.

Next time you’re shopping for a mattress you may want to consider something healthier. :)
