A new bag tax just went into effect in my area, where you now have to pay five cents a bag. The cashiers are admittedly prepped for battle when they don’t look at you and stammer “bags are five cents now”. They were relieved to hear my answer to that, which was: “awesome!”. We have the added problem around here that lower priced grocery stores have been charging five cents a bag for over a decade, which stigmatizes the practice.
Here’s a story I can take in to my beleaguered friends at the checkout to prop up their spirits; Aylsham, England has been plastic bag free for over a year. More than 70 businesses in the town signed up to support the initiative, and a year on, it is working. More from the Norwich Evening News.

There is this same initiative happening in my town of Quadra Island B.C. I think it is great and I hope to see other communities follow suit. Way to go to all who support these small efforts that make a huge difference.
