If you live anywhere near farmland, chances are good that you can join a Community Supported Agriculture operation (or CSA) to get fresh, local vegetables during the growing season. Some can be on the pricey side, but when stacked up against the cost of the same organic products purchased from the grocery store or your local health food centre, you’ll find the cost is roughly the same or cheaper.
A common objection to CSA’s is that you will get too much of the veggies that you don’t need, such as kale. Most CSA’s let you pick and choose to a certain extent and some will even supplement your weekly share with organic fruits and veggies that they buy for you – a common feature for winter baskets shipped from CSA’s. For more on CSA’s check out the page over at the Green Guide.
