The Greening of New Orleans; A City Being Rebuilt Sustainably

by Angela August 30th, 2009 - No Comments »

This week marks the fourth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. When Katrina decimated a good portion of the city, the people in charge of rebuilding some of the structures wanted to make sure that they were “doing it right” this time around. Global Green USA, the US division of the green organization founded by former Soviet premier Gorbachev, has already done a lot of revitalization work in both the state of Louisiana and the city of New Orleans. Specifically, they have assisted with the Holy Cross project, a sustainable village being built out of the ruins of the Lower Ninth Ward.

The Department of Energy is also participating in a cost-matching program with Global Green to underwrite new solar power projects in the state. The idea is to rebuild New Orleans in a manner that can not only survive another hurricane, but help humanity to coexist with nature through green building. More on the Greening of New Orleans at Time.
