Jayaprakash Sittambalam Tissainayagam was sentenced to 20 years in Sri Lankan prison for writing articles that criticized the government’s handling of the Sri Lankan civil war. Sri Lanka’s persecution of journalists doesn’t stop there; fourteen Sri Lankan journalists have been killed since the current regime took power and thirty have fled for their lives from their country, leaving their friends and family behind.
Tissainayagam’s case reached international ears when President Obama singled out his case as representative of that of the persecuted journalist.
