If you were just casually avoiding food with corn in it and GMO’s before, here is a new reason. Monsanto’s GMO corn has been linked to organ failure in rats. The study itself is very interesting to read; I had no idea that Monsanto’s Roundup resistant strain of corn was Roundup resistant because it contains chemical elements of Roundup. This means that every time you are taking a bite of corn on the cob from this particular strain, you are nomming on weed killer. Nice.
The next question, after seeing this study, is how to avoid GMO food. The problem is unless you are avoiding corn and soy, you can’t. Vegetarians and vegans rely on soy for protein and as a meat substitute, while corn is generally avoided as the junk food of the vegetable world anyway. Corn is very hard to avoid in the average North American diet, since so many processed foods contain it.
The best way to avoid GMO (genetically modified organism) is to buy fresh, buy local, and avoid processed foods. There are more tips at the Huffington Post, including purchasing food with the USDA label if you must purchase processed foods. I would love to hear from some vegetarians as to how you would go about replacing soy in your diet; leave your tips in the comment section!
