As usual, the good folks over at the Huffington Post have an excellent article on food safety. Consumer Reports magazine found that 39% of the bagged salad samples tested contained an unacceptably high level of fecal bacteria. Maybe it’s time to consider making your own again, and investing in one of those salad spinners if you don’t already have one. Yikes!
The salads purchased were sold in plastic clamshells and bags. Consumer Reports recommends washing these products even if the packaging says “prewashed” and to use them well before their best-before date. As the video states, the worst offenders were salads that contained spinach.

I have one of those salad spinners and I really like it. When I come home from the grocery store with lettuce, I clean it and break it into bits. Then I spin it and put it in the fridge. From there it is so easy to grab a handful everyday for lunch or dinner. The lettuce is kept crisp and fresh as well.
The process of cleaning and preparing the lettuce takes me no more than 5 minutes which is not much time. Much better than eating the crap that comes out of the bagged lettuce.
