Linda Coady, vice president for sustainability with VANOC, has stated that the Olympics are still on target to be green despite massive snow hauling efforts to ensure that the venues are covered in the appropriate amount of snow.
Sustainability has been a key focus, from everything from carbon offsets for traveling spectators to sustainably crafted medals, the process of which can be seen in the above Daily Planet video. Coady states that VANOC is still on track to its goal of 118,000 tonnes of carbon for the entire Games where the Calgary games burned up 248,000 tonnes over 17 days.
And all those helicopters flying to the top of Cypress Mountain? Coady states: “”If we used helicopters every day until the end of February, for eight hours a day, it would increase our carbon footprint by less than one per cent”.
