
A new estimate of the potential for wind power generated in the US has tripled previous numbers. The new study estimates that 37 million gigawatt hours per year could be generated by wind power in the US, which sails far beyond the previous 1993 estimate of about 10.7 million gigawatt hours per year.
The jump reflects the technological advances in wind power generation technology of the last decade. Wind speed increases with height, and turbines have been getting taller. More on the study, conducted by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and AWS Truewind, on the Wired website.
