Pedro Alcantara de Souza was a man fighting for the cause of land reform in the Brazilian Amazon. Yesterday, he was shot five times in the head as he was riding his bicycle for his activism.
The Amazon state of Para, where he was killed, is no stranger to violence against environmental activists. Dorothy Stang, an American nun working with peasants and farmers in the area, was murdered in 2005.
After serving for 14 years as a city councilor, de Souza was the president of the small farmer’s union. It has been confirmed that his killing was carried out by hired gunmen.
