The harsh chemicals in sunscreen are a hazard to fish and wildlife. When swimming or bathing, the chemical UV filters, preservatives and scents wash off and enter the water system and can pose a threat to the reproductive cycles of fish, amphibians and marine wildlife.

Diethanolamine is just one of the many harmful contents of sunscreen that has been found in waterways around the country, posing a threat to animals and humans.

In some areas, many beaches that have endangered reefs are starting to ban the use of lotions with oils and chemical ingredients because they are not eco-friendly. Sunscreen is an absolute must for the summer and there are several different brands with healthy and all natural ingredients that can be used.

Consumers are urged to use products with no preservatives and avoid sunscreens.

Avoid the 4 most common, yet toxic chemicals:
– PABA
– Octinoxate
– Oxybenzone
– 4-methylbenzylidene camphor or the preservative butylparaben.

Exchange sunscreens with petroleum-based ingredients such as mineral oil, for natural emollients like olive, sunflower and jojoba oils, shea and cocoa butter.

Going au-naturel with your sunscreen will be well worth it for your body, and the environment.
