The Oil Pollution Act was put into place over 20 years ago in a time when undersea drilling hadn’t even been conceived of to the extent that it is taking place today. Today, Obama and Congress were working together to raise the liability cap put in place in that act in order to have the ability to present BP with the full bill for a cleanup in the Gulf Coast that is sure to cost much more than the current cap of $75 Million.
The bill’s target cap is $10 Billion, a number that most of the House Democrats are supporting, but will likely be vigorously opposed by Republicans who are in the pockets of the oil industry.
Also, let’s start calling it what it is: the BP oil spill. Not the Gulf Coast oil spill. Wonder how much they paid to have that term used?
