Where To Buy Your Solar Setup in Canada

by Angela July 31st, 2010 - No Comments »

Many people are interested in getting into solar or renewable energy for either a cottage or for a main residential home. Getting started, however, is not that easy.

The first thing to do is to check your local phone book. You may be surprised at the number of local consultants that are in your area, especially if you are in a more populated section of the country. If you are in cottage country of any description, you are bound to find someone local.

Here are a few solar energy dealers I’ve gotten to know over the years as good, solid businesses that will do the best job that they can for you in helping you with your solar panel or solar water heater installation.

Sun Volts, Ontario

These guys operate out of a few different cities in Ontario, all of which can be found on their website.

Renewable Energy of Plum Hollow, Kingston

This company doesn’t have a website, but they are still the solar dealer of choice for many in the Kingston area.

Nova, Kelowna, BC

Nova’s services are not limited to Kelowna. They will ship nationally, and they are one of the more trustworthy names in the business.

Want more? Search CanSIA’s member directory for a solar dealer that will outfit you with the power of the sun. If I have not listed your favourite store, please feel free to list it in the comments section.

No Green In Your New Tech Product Spells Marketing Suicide

by Angela July 30th, 2010 - No Comments »

At the ZDNet IT Priorities Roundtable discussion last week in Singapore, it was determined by the panelists that to not include green products in a marketing mix is a bad move on the part of tech companies. Specifically, nobody wants to hear that a product is not green, and the failure to point it out on the label can automatically make CIO’s and IT buyers think that it is not.

CIO’s also want to be told exactly how a product is green and how it can help change user behavior within their organizations and to save money.

The location of the panel discussion may very well have played into its results; Singapore is known for being one of the most environmentally forward countries in the world, in all industry sectors. The new 50-hectare CleanTech park in Singapore is just one green tech initiative on the part of the small country to green working environments and their technology.

This video by artist Haik Hoisington is entitled “The Flower”, and it contrasts a society where happy flowers are freely produced and sold with a society where the same plants are repressed.

It was released as California is ramping up to voting on Proposition 19 in the fall, which aims to deregulate marijuana throughout California and charge taxes on it.

More of Hoisington’s work can be found on his website.

100 Days of the BP Oil Spill and Deep Water Drilling in the Maritimes

by Angela July 28th, 2010 - No Comments »

100 days after the Deepwater Horizon oil well began spilling oil in plumes into the Gulf of Mexico, BP is talking about a permanent well kill that may be in place as early as Monday. While the oil well itself is mostly under control and is closer to being under permanent control, there are still massive cleanup efforts to be conducted, safety measures to be improved on future deep water drilling, and charges to be laid in one of the largest environmental disasters in history.

BP itself, under the direction of embattled CEO Tony Hayward, was guilty early on of a pitifully slow and careless response to the oil spill that seemed more concerned with putting a positive spin on BP than it did to actually solving the problem. As a result, Hayward was taken off the case and will be leaving the company in October, according to recent reports. In addition, investigations by the US government will be “ongoing … there will be a criminal inquiry as well as civil investigation and it involves more than simply BP,”  stated U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.

Despite the massive issues laid bare by the Gulf disaster, deep water drilling will proceed off of Canada’s east coast. Having just gotten back from a trip to those beautiful shores, I found myself contemplating “what if” the beautiful red beaches of PEI or the sandy shores of New Brunswick would be hit by a similar oil disaster. Given the cavalier attitude of the Canadian Conservative government towards everything energy, it is likely that history will be repeated here. Anyone who is interested in preserving Canada’s Maritime shores should actively be asking themselves what they can do to stop deep water drilling off of this coast until adequate backup measures, in the form of backup rigs or others, can be put in place.

Eco-Friendly Drain Cleaners That Work Now on the Market

by Angela July 27th, 2010 - No Comments »

While most of us have replaced household products with greener versions in various shades of green, drain cloggers are still something that many families have hung onto for convenience, not wanting to rely on drain snakes or canned air products for what can potentially be a rather disgusting issue to tackle. Bottom line, an eco-friendly drain cleaner has to work reliably and quickly to replace its non eco-friendly counterparts. Here are a few that report that they do the trick, and if you want to try to make your own, check the video.

Eco-Green Drain Cleaner
A new product from Daimer, this commercial strength drain opener promises to lick clogged drains using plant-based technology.

Bac-Out Drain Care
This product from Bi-O-Kleen uses enzymes to clean out drains and keep them running smoothly.

Earth Enzymes
This product from Ecos works off of the same principle as Bac-Out – enzymes take care of the organic matter that clogs drains, allowing water to flow freely through them.

Most of these products work the best with occasional applications, rather than waiting until you have a clogged drain to solve the problem.

New Study Shows Flame Retardants Harm Pregnant Women And Infants

by Angela July 26th, 2010 - No Comments »

A new study has provided good evidence that flame retardants may harm pregnant women and their infants. The study has shown that exposure to PDBE flame retardants results in a lower concentration of thyroid hormones during pregnancy, which can harm the health of both the mother and the developing child. The director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences has reacted to the study in a press release by the NIEHS and an interview with Environmental Health News.

“Clearly it is something that should be looked at further,” Linda Birnbaum, director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, said in an interview with Environmental Health News. “I think the change [in the women’s hormones] is probably real. It’s in agreement with other human studies in other [non-pregnant] adults and it’s the first study showing a pretty significant effect.”

Hyperthyroidism and other conditions are potential complications of lower TSH levels, which is what the researchers detected in the study of over 270 pregnant women.

PDBE’s are present in many flame retardant products in common household use, including sofa coverings such as Scotchguard.

Sign the Petition to Make Companies Use Kid-Safe Chemicals

Unless you really play too much World of Warcraft, chances are good that if you are over the age of 25 you have at least one little one in your family that you don’t want to see hurt by toxic chemicals in the products that we use every day, even in products for kids. The Environmental Working Group is spearheading an effort to create kid-safe chemicals, an effort that has caught the eye of both Congress and the White House. Among some of the salient points of the new bill being put before legislators:

-industrial chemicals must be safe for kids
-any new chemicals must be tested before they go to market
-the EPA will be given clear authority to order more tests and recalls

To view the full act, check it out here. To sign the petition to get legislators to pass bills for kid-safe chemicals, check it out here.

Mosquito Repellent With Garlic way Better For You Than DEET

by Angela July 24th, 2010 - No Comments »

Not all of us have access to fancy jungle plants or termite mounds like the fellow in the video, so natural mosquito repellents are a little harder to come by for us.

There are a number of natural mosquito repellents on the market, which have been sold with limited degrees of success. The first ones that came out on the market were not that awesome, forcing many of us green types back to the conventional product for fear of West Nile. Since that time, a number of new products have come out on the market that actually do blast mosquitoes without blasting the planet or using harmful chemicals on your skin.

One of them, which apparently protected world leaders at this year’s G8 conference in Huntsville, Ontario, is a product called Mosquito Barrier. Using garlic extract as a main ingredient, Mosquito Barrier boasts a 95.3% repellent rate.

Other natural products available to zap mosquitoes include Brittanie’s Thyme organic insect repellent, and various essential oils including lemon eucalyptus oil.

The Story of Cosmetics by Annie Leonard

by Angela July 23rd, 2010 - No Comments »

YouTube Preview Image

Annie Leonard has aligned herself with the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics to produce a new video about the dangerous chemicals that are in cosmetics and personal care products. Lead in red lipsticks, toxins in shampoos, and even carcinogens in baby shampoos are all the result of an industry with a serious lack of oversight and regulation, with a healthy dose of corporate greed. Watch the video and pass it on to your friends.
