In an announcement that’s likely to get the backs of conventional milk producers up, researchers have discovered that organic milk is less fatty than regular milk, contains more nutrients, and is less susceptible to weather as a factor in how nutritious the milk is.
Gillian Butler at the University of Newcastle in the UK was the study lead, and noted that non-organic milk collected during a poor UK summer and the following winter had higher saturated fat content than milk collected in a “regular” year, which let’s face it, we haven’t seen much of in the past decade.
This susceptibility to a changing climate is not found in organic milk, which relies on access to pasture rather than cattle feed. What cows are naturally supposed to eat also makes their milk more nutritious. In addition to being lower in saturated fats, organic milk is naturally higher in Omega 3′s and other beneficial fatty acids.
