Ozone Hole Forms In The Arctic as Canada Cuts Ozone Monitoring

by Angela October 4th, 2011 - No Comments »

We all know that the best way to make a problem go away is to ignore it completely. But when that problem is a gaping hole in the ozone layer above the Arctic, the scientific community may not agree with the Canadian government that this is the best solution.

Abnormally cold winters are the cause, according to the scientific journal, Nature. The colder the winters, the more ozone gets destroyed by the chemicals that act on ozone. The Antarctic is well-known for its ozone depletion, but 2010 is the first winter that the Arctic got a rap for what could be termed an ozone hole.

In addition to cutting the monitoring of the ozone in the Arctic, Environment Canada would not grant interviews to the Montreal Gazette on the subject. If you disagree with this gagging of scientists and the inaction on climate change in our government, don’t let your local Conservative MP know. They don’t care. Let your local Liberal, NDP or Green MP know, or start blogging about it. The only way we can fight our government’s inaction on the climate is in the court of public opinion. Make yours count.
