Natural and Accessible Hangover Cures You May Need for New Year’s Day

by Angela December 31st, 2011 - No Comments »

For some greenies, our bodies are our temples that we would never consider desecrating with alcohol. For the rest of us, here are some natural hangover cures that won’t break the bank or require going out to a store that isn’t open tomorrow. Although for some of them, you may want to go out and stock up today, unless you have tripe in your fridge on a regular basis. Between the infographic above and the tips below, you’re sure to hammer your hangover into submission so you can enjoy one of your days off instead of spending it in abject misery.

Water Before, During and After
Drink lots of water before your big night and mix up your drinks with the odd glass from time to time to keep your body hydrated. This will also keep you awake longer. Before you go out, pour yourself a big glass and leave it on your nightstand or somewhere else you’ll see it coming in so you remember to drink some before you go to bed.

Intersperse Drinking With Eating
Order the odd appetizer throughout the evening with your drinks. Avoid high-fat stuff like chicken wings and loaded baked potatoes. Almost any bar will do up a plate of veggies and dip for you if you ask nicely, even if it isn’t on the menu.

Tripe Soup
This isn’t as gross as it sounds to anyone who has eaten at a Vietnamese restaurant. This is meant to be both a preventative and a cure, so grab a small bowl of Pho with tripe before heading out for the night and one to go for tomorrow morning.

Bloody Mary
For those of you who can handle the combo of alcohol and tomato juice, the Bloody Mary is supposed to make a good hangover cure. Just don’t pour it in your coffee. Some argue that this makes things worse, but the Bloody Mary adherents are adamant about their cure of choice.

Eggs Benedict
These were actually invented by Samuel Benedict after he had been out the night before whooping it up. He asked the Waldorf Astoria to make his eggs this way and boom, the Benedict was born. There are some who advocate a greasy breakfast to kill a hangover, but you’ll get the same effect from a big breakfast of fruit, oatmeal and/or scrambled eggs with spinach.

Above all, stay safe tonight and make sure you have a plan to get home safe. Happy New Year!

Often-Wrong Celebrity Advice and Factual Statements Debunked

by Angela December 30th, 2011 - No Comments »

Photo from silas216: Flickr

Celebrities often have a gift – they are born beautiful (except Snooki). Despite this, magazines and websites are always inclined to ask them for beauty “secrets” that don’t involve their genetic programming. A new study, Sense about Science, has debunked a number of the celebrity beauty, health and general advice myths that often arise from this frequent line of questioning. A couple of the gems they’ve debunked:

-Suzi Quatro’s claim that colon cleanses stop all illness
-Simon Cowell’s reliance on drip-fed vitamins (we wish we were joking)
-Snooki claiming the sea was so salty because of all the whale sperm
-Bill O’Reilly claiming that we don’t know how the tides work (in all fairness, we don’t know how he works either. For anyone.)

Elephants Have Worst Year for Poaching of Ivory Since 1989

by Angela December 29th, 2011 - No Comments »

Efforts to reduce elephant poaching for their ivory tusks have not been successful. 2011 set a record for ivory seizures, mostly due to high demand in Asia. The ivory trade was banned in 1989, but smugglers have gotten wise to efforts to curb their activities by changing routes and evading customs officials. Despite record seizures of ivory, the smugglers generally evade being punished for their crimes.

There have been 13 seizures of large ivory shipments over 2000 pounds in 2011, where 2010 only saw 6 such incidents. The wildlife trade monitoring network TRAFFIC called 2012 the “Annus Horriblis” for elephants. For more on the elephant ivory trade and their efforts to help stop it, check out their website.

Solar Paint May Power Appliances in Future

by Angela December 28th, 2011 - No Comments »

Researchers at Notre Dame (RUDY! RUDY! – oops, sorry, holiday movie watching intruding there) have developed a paste containing solar cells that could be used to power home appliances. While it is less than 1% efficient, it is cheap to produce and would probably be a great marketing tool for any company that wants to start using it. The paint is called “Sunbelievable” and while it is extremely cool, it isn’t quite ready for the market yet. Researchers are hoping to boost the efficiency factor before releasing it into the wild, but it could conceivably be an extra source of power in your home by the time you hit retirement. How cool is that?

If you want the scientific skinny, check out the article on Sunbelievable in the Chemical and Engineering News.

Natural and Organic Toothpaste is Chemical-free and Fresh

by Angela December 27th, 2011 - 1 Comment »

A new year starts soon, and it’s time to resolve to replace at least one conventional thing you use every day with something organic. If you are going to make a commitment to do it, do some research to find out what the best product is for the environment and the one you like the most. The following organic and natural toothpastes and other dental cleaning products are some of my favourites. If you have any  that you’d like to suggest, please feel free to leave them in the comments section.

All of these companies make a fluoride-free option if you are trying to avoid it.

Tooth Soap
Gluten-free, chemical-free and certified kosher, Tooth Soap does nothing but organic dental cleaning products. They’re also giving out free shipping throughout the month of December to both US and Canada. They’ve just launched a Peppermint and Hemp Whip flavour for the adventurous.

Green Beaver
Yeah, some of these toothpaste flavours look kind of funky. But I can testify for Green Apple and Frosty Mint.

Weleda Natural Toothpaste for Kids
This fluoride-free formula is gentle on gums and is well-reviewed on Amazon. Not surprising; I’ve never met a Weleda product I didn’t like. If you have dry skin and you haven’t tried their Skin Food yet, run, do not walk to your nearest health food store or purchase it online.

Genetically Modified Mosquitoes may be Released in Florida Keys

by Angela December 26th, 2011 - No Comments »

Friends of the Earth is questioning a decision to release genetically modified mosquitoes in Florida. UK-based firm Oxitec is working with the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District to release the mosquitoes sometime in 2012 to control the natural mosquito population and prevent the spread of dengue fever. The project still needs approval at the federal and state levels and it would be a pilot project in the US. Trials  in the Cayman Islands using this technique eliminated 80 percent of mosquitoes in the test area.

While these results are promising, Friends of the Earth and other environmental groups have expressed concerns about releasing a genetically modified organism into the wild. You can read their report and their concerns on their website.

There are a bunch of free tech services available to help Santa wish your friends and family a Merry Christmas. Google has put together a great site at http://www.sendacallfromsanta.com/ which lets you send a very personalized phone call or video. If you want to shell out $15.00 you can even upload a photo of your house to a website that will create a video showing Santa drinking milk and eating cookies in your own house.

Whatever you are doing for the holidays, remember to recycle your wrapping paper where you can and any other packaging.

EPA Adopts Historic Regulations over Power Plant Emissions

by Angela December 23rd, 2011 - No Comments »

Mercury, lead and other toxic pollutants are now regulated by the EPA for one of America’s chief polluters: coal and oil-fired power plants. Big oil and coal have been trying to fight the regulations with lots of advertising dollars telling you Americans may lose their jobs over the regulations (see the commercial that constantly runs on CNN with bull and logic fuzzier than your favourite flannel slippers). The EPA argues that the regulations will actually create jobs to the tune of 46,000 short-term construction jobs and 8,000 long-term jobs. The short-term jobs will see scrubbers and other equipment being installed on power plants, while the long-term positions will likely be involved in monitoring pollution levels to ensure they meet the standards.

New NOSB Members May Mean Tighter Rules on Organic Food

by Angela December 22nd, 2011 - No Comments »

While this doesn’t come as a surprise to those who are really involved with their organic food, the USDA maintains a list of items that are permissible to go into organic food that may not have come from organic origins themselves. Some of them, however, are surprising. Organic beer, for example, doesn’t need to be made from organic hops. If you want to review the list of allowable foods, the USDA maintains it here.

The National Organic Standards Board is responsible for setting these guidelines, and according to the Atlantic, five new board members being appointed by the Obama administration may help to tip the scales further towards tighter organic food content regulations.
