It’s about time we stand up and demand to be informed!
We make informed decisions daily: news tells us about traffic jams so we take another route, concerned about calories? we make choices based on nutritional information, shouldn’t the same be said for whether we want to buy products containing GMOs or not?
It’s as simple as a label on your favourite product for you to say either “its ok I like this enough to keep buying it” or “sheesh I had no idea, I’d rather not buy a GMO product”.
So why are the big companies fighting so hard to not have the label? Keep in mind some of our favourite organic brands are owned by these big companies, like Pepsi-Co who owns Naked Juice, Coca Cola who owns Odwalla AND Honest Tea or Kellogg’s who owns Bear Naked. Why are they shelling out the big bucks against GMO labeling? The list provided by Organic Consumer is extensive and quite shocking to say the least.
Proposition 37 may be based in California for now, but this can be the start of something big. Hopefully with the attention that prop 37 is getting more states and countries will stand up and demand to have proper food labeling.
Until we get our labels, I found this great resource on the Read it With a Grain of Salt blog:
Greenpeace has created a “How to Avoid Genetically Engineered Food” shoppers guide. The guide lists products by category and even gives you the brands. Best believe I will be consulting this guide while making my next grocery list!
