A Frito-Lay production building became the first commercial operation to receive a LEED Gold Existing Building Certification from the US Green Building Council. The plant in Casa Grande, Arizona manufactures Lay’s potato chips, Cheetos, Doritos and other Frito-Lay brands.
The site has decreased water usage by 17% since 2006 through water filtration with native plants and other measures. Major credits towards the certification were realized through the facility’s waste reduction program, through which they diverted 99% of their waste from landfills. They have also reduced their energy consumption by 20% since 2006 with a heat recovery system, high efficiency ovens, and skylights to supplement office lighting systems. More at PR Newswire.
