A huge campaign is underway to Save the Arctic by creating a global sanctuary around the North Pole. The Greenpeace campaign is seeking a million digital signatures for their Arctic Scroll, which will be planted in the seabed at the North Pole. Stars like Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Richard Branson, Bryan Adams, Robert Redford, Thom Yorke, Penelope Cruz, and Javier Bardem have already signed on, and their names are among the first 100 to be listed on the Arctic Scroll.
According to a Greenpeace blog post, the area around the North Pole is currently defined as part of the high seas territory. Under the Save the Arctic campaign, the organization would like the UN to take charge of the uninhabited lands and make them off-limits to polluters.
Currently, the campaign has garnered about 70,000 signatures and counting, with a goal of one million. You can add your name to the Arctic Scroll on the campaign website, and “ask world leaders to create a global sanctuary in the uninhabited area around the North Pole and a ban on oil drilling and industrial fishing in Arctic waters.”
