One way that contractors try to differentiate themselves from the competition is by listing their services as eco-friendly. The problem is, there’s zero regulation on their claims and you have to rely on the fact that they’re telling the truth. We all know how well that works out with other products (not) so here are a few ways to tell if your contractor is green or greenwashing.
Check the Credentials
A seriously green contractor is going to have some form of accreditation, such as LEED through the US Green Building Council.
Ask About Materials
Ask if your contractor will be using sustainably harvested woods and, more importantly, ask them to show you the wood with the Forest Stewardship Council’s stamp. Anyone can say they are using these materials, it’s another thing to prove it.
