Yesterdays Ring Of Fire

by michael May 21st, 2012 - No Comments »

If you didn’t see the news yesterday, or have a friend or family member tell you, there was a solar eclipse. This rare eclipse was dubbed “The ring of fire” because the sun didn’t fully get covered. The small ring of the sun that was exposed gave the silhouette of the eclipse a fire like halo.

Today, pictures are flooding the internet as people share the what they saw when they pointed their cameras towards the sky. Some are breathtaking like the one above taken from space, others are from pin hole boxes. If you have any pictures feel free to post a link!

Around The World In 584 Days

by michael May 15th, 2012 - No Comments »

Many people attempt to make the journey around the world. Some race for speed, some race for pride, but LOMOcean Design races for scientific achievement. The New Zealand based company wanted to make the trip around the world to prove that a sea going vessel could travel 25,000 miles powered solely by the rays of the sun.

The trip that started back in 2010, recently finished last week, taking the 4-man crew 584 days to complete. Along with making it around the world on solar power, the vessel itself is also the largest solar powered boat in the world, spanning a whopping 100ft.

Its Fixie Time

by michael May 10th, 2012 - No Comments »

Finally after driving to work for the last  year and half, I have decided to purchase a fixie( fixed gear bike)  to commute to work. The 6 mile roundtrip journey will finally see some bike action. I still haven’t decided which bike I’m going to get but the SGV retrospec fixies look awesome.

I’ll be documenting how much money i save with the transition, so a follow up post is a must. I haven’t ridden a bike for about a year so having the thrill of going down a hill is something I can look forward to! I may timelapse a daily commute to and from work( day and night) so make sure to check back for a video in about a month.

A Brighter Cinco de Mayo

by michael May 5th, 2012 - No Comments »

Tonight has more to offer than free shots and guacamole. Tonight is a Full Moon, and not just any full moon but a “Supermoon”. I know that’s not a scientific term but that’s what its being called. What’s important is the moon  will be 30% brighter and about 14% larger.

This only happens once a year, so it’s worth going out of your house tonight in your snuggie or sombrero and taking a look. This is the one time of the year when the moon is closest to the earth.

In two weeks the moon will pass between the sun and the earth and eclipse. This you can’t miss, a lunar eclipse is one of those natural occurrences that never gets old. As you stumble home tonight from your Cinco de Mayo party, remember to look up and marvel at the wonders of our universe.

The Future Of Traffic, Slot Car Style

by michael May 1st, 2012 - No Comments »

Over the weekend I had the opportunity of driving the 2013 Ford Focus EV. This was the first electric car that I’ve ever driven and been able afford. After going through the typical test drive process, I asked myself  “would I purchase this car” the answer was no. My answer was no because of my biased on EV’s, not because the car was bad, the car itself exceeded my expectations.

As much as I like the idea of alternative fuels, I still believe electric isn’t the answer. As my mind turned, I thought about the movie Minority Report, in which all the cars are on a magnetized track when they’re on the expressway. It brought my mind back to the Google self driving car.  I think everybody’s problems would be solved if we stopped expanding freeways and put that money into adapting current cars to fit tracks we would build.

People would have an app that updated them on how long their trip would take based on a time chart. They would pay a toll to leave at peak times like 5pm and pay less or nothing on off peak times like 8pm.

The cost of gas would be mostly eliminated because of the tracks, and the toll would be far less than the gas they would normally spend. It would not only cut down on congestion but it would force us to create a new means of transportation. Motorcycles, Cars, Boats, Trains, and Planes have dominated transportation over the last century.  The transition would force us into a new uncomfortable zone, in which we would be forced to adapt; hopefully creating a new way to get from A to B.

Will Technology Give Us Superhuman Powers?

by michael April 23rd, 2012 - No Comments »

Technology is endless. Everyday something new and innovative comes out that utilizes technology. Tech is a point where pretty much anybody can be aided to look like a genius. Nearly a third of the U.S. population owns a Smartphone, which means 100,000,000 people have access to any information, can record any information with a camera, and translate any language.

Now by today’s standards that may not seem like much but that’s a lot of information in a lot of hands at all times, and now there’s more power. Scientists as the University of Texas just designed a chip that allows cell phones to scan through walls, paper, and yes, clothing.

This technology would be low cost, which means it could be adopted by all cell phone manufactures and put into the hands of millions of people. Now to me this is too far, once people start becoming superman with their iphones and droids, spying through walls and clothing, privacy starts to get infringed.

Uppleva, It’s A Hybrid

by michael April 18th, 2012 - No Comments »

If you like design and television, IKEA may have something for you.  With their new commercial circling the Internet faster than the E-trade baby, IKEA’s Uppleva solves many traditional problems that come with TV’s. This new design isn’t considered a TV or furniture, it’s a hybrid of both.

All the old issues of wires showing, entertainment systems being stacked, and more remotes than you can fathom, the Uppleva solves.  To keep this blog in tune with the environment, IKEA’s most recent endeavor for the environment was installing EV charging stations at their locations.

IKEA’s Arizona location was the first to see a Plug-In charging station with many more to follow. If you have a Tesla, Fisker, Leaf, Volt, or Prius Plug-In feel free to shop for some awesome looking furniture while “refueling “ your car!

IKEA Gloats Over A Tote

by michael March 17th, 2012 - No Comments »

IKEA has almost completely switched to Tote bags, with only 8% customers choosing plastic throwaways. You may think this isn’t big deal, but that’s 64 million bags that didn’t end up in trees, landfills or oceans last year.

With recent mock-ups of $80,000 dollar pre-fab houses, you can see IKEA is testing the water with sustainable products. We look forward to what they will have to offer in the future and solute them to their current green practices.

That’s A Pretty Fruity Light!

by michael March 12th, 2012 - No Comments »

Energy saving seems to be a big trend right now. With low flow toilets, LED light bulbs, and water recycling, it seems like people are trying to save some cash while helping the environment.

One area I haven’t seen explored is fruit and vegetable power. Believe it or not, but the vitamins and minerals in fruits and vegetables combined with certain metals, like copper, can creates a chemical reaction that generates useable power.

The power that’s generated from fruits and vegetables is miniscule, but we haven’t extensively explored it. Imagine if a couple thousand lemons or potatoes concentrated into a solution was the answer to storing energy for electric cars or solar panels….

Watch the video below and have some fun creating a lemon or potato flashlight. ( great project for kids)
