More Festive Than A Shake Weight

by michael December 23rd, 2011 - No Comments »

The Holidays are here and it’s time to be festive, so what do you do? You make a snow globe! Snow globes are a perfect excuse to be creative around this time of the year.

Making snow globes is also sustainable; the act of recycling a jar into a present is a humbling experience. With an unlimited choice of themes, the first question you need to ask yourself is what kind of jars do I have lying around?

When you find your jar you’ll need glitter, glycerin, water, epoxy and whatever figurines you want on the inside. After you’ve gotten your supplies, you’ll need to add 96% water to the jar with a dash of glycerin and the glitter. Next epoxy your figurines to the cap and let dry, finally epoxy the rim of the jar shut and screw on. Let the lid dry then let it snow!

Honda Is Officially Out Of Its Element

by michael December 18th, 2011 - 5 Comments »

Honda will no longer produce its Element model. The small SUV had a good run for the last 10 years, winning several awards for its versatility. The Element was a strange car that thought outside the box but also looked like a box. With features like waterproof seats and floors and 64 different seat configurations, it was a car that was up for any activity.

With 2011 coming to an end the Element will follow. It wouldn’t surprise me if an electric Element came out sometime in the future with a similar design and even more interesting features. The Element was a car that helped start the small SUV craze, hopefully the future element will help start a more sustainable craze…

Coolest Electric Motorcycle EVER!

by michael December 11th, 2011 - No Comments »

If you like motorcycles and science fiction, you’ll love the Parker Brothers. They’ve created a real life Tron Lifecycle that’s both road legal and electric. Yes, I said electric, this bad boy can cruise up to 100 miles on a single charge and be fully charged in just half an hour.

Don’t let this bikes good looks fool you into thinking it’s just another movie prop, the LifeCycle means business, capable of speeds in excess of 100mph. Now 100mph may not seem that fast for a top speed, but 100mph while in a plank position probably feels like 200mph.

Now the bad news is the electric version of this bike is still a prototype but there is a production bike for sale at Hammacher that uses a gas engine. Never the less, vehicles that push the boundaries of design, while incorporating the needs of the environment always win in my book.

Check out how amazing it looks at night!

An Eclipse For The World To See

by michael December 9th, 2011 - No Comments »

Saturday, December 10, 2011 at 4:45 am PST, the last lunar eclipse until 2014 will occur. The eclipse will render the moon a beautiful shade of red for about an hour and half. The reason why the moon doesn’t turn black is because there is a layer of dusty air covering the service of earth, which reflects the light from the sun. In essence it will be like a sunset over the surface of the moon.

Being that the eclipse will only be visible to certain parts of the world, the website Slooh will have a live feed from their space camera, allowing everyone in the world to witness this rare and beautiful occurrence.

Is Your Christmas Wood Real Or Fake?

by michael December 8th, 2011 - No Comments »

With Christmas just around the corner, more and more people are scrabbling to buy a tree. With new Christmas Tree lots popping up everyday and Internet sales of fake trees rising, one has to ask what happens to all these trees when the Christmas spirit dies?

The National Christmas Tree Association has made a chart comparing the pros and cons of artificial trees vs. real trees. You can scroll through it but the quick answer is real trees are better. They don’t have any chemicals, they aren’t made of petroleum and they smell amazing!

With practically every new product these days having petroleum in it, spare yourself the guilt of contributing to landfills and go pick out a nice real Christmas Tree.

Will Your Next House Be PreFab?

by michael December 5th, 2011 - No Comments »

I am a huge advocate of modular or Pre- Fabricated homes. They not only look great but, they use less materials and can be assembled in a fraction of the time it takes to build a traditional home. I’ve always loved contemporary architecture and livinghomes.net, a prefab house website, seamlessly pairs design and function together.

I’ve stumbled upon the website livinghomes several times, each time digging a little deeper into the site and actually designing and pricing out my future dream house.  The cool thing about livinghomes is that a lot of the materials used are green and the house can be up to LEED standards, both in the building process and function.

All the designs on the website are fresh, combining contemporary design with green materials. The website has 11 designs to choose from and even offers the option to design your own place. My favorite is the RK4, take a look around and see which designs you like. If you want to dig even deeper into design ideas you can check out the website DigsDigs.com, who offer design options for any project you have.
