Why Bigger Is Better

by michael February 29th, 2012 - 1 Comment »

I’m starting to notice more and more small cars on the road today. With gas prices soon to be above 5 dollars a gallon, car companies are targeting people with cool looking compacts like the Scion IQ, Fiat 500 and Smart Car.

This trend works in Europe because the majority of the cars are this size, gas prices are about $10 dollars a gallon and the roads are much smaller. In America though, these cars are out of place, if you put a smart car next to a Ford Focus, one of the the best selling car in America, they’re dwarfed.

You can put as many airbags as you want in one of these compacts but against a vehicle of superior mass traveling at the same speed, a compact becomes a grim place to be. As we all learned from Newton’s law of motion “For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. “

If you watch the video below, you’ll see what I mean. The mass of the larger car transfers its momentum into the smaller car; this transfer basically pushes the smaller car out of the way.

With car companies trying to appeal to a younger generation with less money for a car and even less for gas, they may be pushing them into danger. I would like to see more companies aim for standard sized cars with more efficient power supplies, I mean nobody likes to be pushed around…. especially at 70mph.

Crop Circles In The Snow?

by michael February 22nd, 2012 - No Comments »

It’s amazing how people create art these days. Several posts ago, I covered an artist that strapped LED lights to sheep then strategically herded them to perform a light show.  It’s amazing how art has transformed not only in technique but also in scale.

Recently, Sonja Hinrichsen’s and her 4 helpers created snow art. The task was simple, walk in patterns to create huge circles that resemble giant balls of yarn. The sheer size of this art is amazing and what’s more amazing is it only took 3 hours.

These snow crop cirlcles not only are creative but also sustainable. Artwork that uses nature has no ill side effects to the  environment. If more artist were to create work using the resources around them, recycled or in their backyard, a sustainable art movement would occur.

Who wants to be part of that movement? Living just minutes from the beach, I know I’m in.

Did Someone Say Mexican?

by michael February 20th, 2012 - No Comments »

If you like Mexican food, you’ll know Chipotle. Chipotle has established itself as a Mecca for fast, relatively healthy Mexican food. Originally owned by McDonalds, now self owned, Chipotle set themselves apart from other food chains by supplying their restaurants with natural home grow ingredients.

Chipotle recently aired a commercial during the Grammy’s exploiting the dark side of the modern food industry. The commercial is truly inspiring and shows Chipotles integrity, always striving to provide natural high quality food without compromise.  You have to really respect them for what they’re doing; being a natural pioneer isn’t an easy thing to do these days.

Next time you need a tummy full of deliciousness, stop by Chipotle and know that what you’re eating isn’t sprayed full of pesticides and pumped full of hormones.

To Neti Or Not To Neti?

by michael February 7th, 2012 - 1 Comment »

It all started one sunny afternoon in Greece, the year was 2007,  I was on vacation and had gotten off the airplane feeling a bit off.  After dialing 15 numbers to get hold of my parents, I was pointed towards a Neti Pot, they said that this would help shorten whatever I had. I went to the local shop and found a nasal cleansing system that said “Nasal Irrigation”.

I went home read the instructions and tried it out, after several failed attempts at playing tea party with my nose, I was done, the next day I felt so much better and kept using it. To this day, I use my Neti whenever I fly or am feeling worn down and it always solves the problem.

Recently there has been a lot of flack about Brain Eating Amoeba and nasal cleansing. I read about 5 different articles on the subject and found out that Netiing is still safe, as it always has been, you just have to follow the INSTRUCTIONS and you wont have an Amoeba eat your brain.

So if you don’t want to suffer from a Neti Pot death, don’t use tap water. These Amoebas can be consumed orally but are viscous when entered through the nasal passages. Boil, filter or use distilled water and Neti away!

Here is my Neti Pot.

IKEA Goes Alternative

by michael February 6th, 2012 - No Comments »

I love IKEA; it’s one of those companies that just knows what they’re doing…as long as they have their allen wrench. IKEA’s products aren’t the best put together or most sustainable but they just look so good! IKEA recently announced that it would be powering 85% of its U.S. stores with solar power. This is a huge leap for their sustainable portfolio, putting them in the race with other furniture companies to be more eco friendly.

Grids will be set up on top of the roof at each location, powering the store and reducing their carbon footprint. IKEA’s goal is to have 38 of the 44 stores powered by solar energy by August 2012. I will write another follow up post this summer confirming that my local IKEA(Burbank, CA) has installed solar panels.
