by michael May 15th, 2012 - No Comments »

Many people attempt to make the journey around the world. Some race for speed, some race for pride, but LOMOcean Design races for scientific achievement. The New Zealand based company wanted to make the trip around the world to prove that a sea going vessel could travel 25,000 miles powered solely by the rays of the sun.

The trip that started back in 2010, recently finished last week, taking the 4-man crew 584 days to complete. Along with making it around the world on solar power, the vessel itself is also the largest solar powered boat in the world, spanning a whopping 100ft.

by michael October 14th, 2011 - No Comments »

Los Angeles has recently put an energy initiative into play, asking people to flex their power. This new initiative asks every one, mostly commercial buildings to flex their power just a little more.

Electrical power causes lots of problems from CO2 emissions to health hazards. EMR (Electromagnetic Radiation) is the number one cause for serious health issues such as Cancer. The first place to start is in the daytime. Do you really need your lights on when it’s a perfect 75 degree day and you have windows open, I don’t think so.

For more information check out Flex your power, they have tons of resources to get your on your energy saving path.

by michael June 14th, 2011 - No Comments »

Today was a landmark for Google going “green”, with an investment of $280M dollars to fund solar panel installations around the United States. This is a huge milestone for solar energy, making it obtainable by the general public. Financing and leasing being made available will allow more people to afford sustainable energy without the big upfront costs.

This isn’t Google’s first time investing in clean energy though, after this deal, Google’s total investments into clean energy will hit a wallet busting $680M dollars. This joint venture with Solar City will definitely be the most expensive and will have the highest impact towards a cleaner future.

Sungevity,Lowe’s Cut Deal To Bring Solar To The Masses

by michael May 17th, 2011 - No Comments »

Sungevity a California-based solar leasing firm announced a deal on Monday with home improvement giant Lowe’s that could make obtaining a personalized estimate for installing solar panels a push-button affair at Lowe’s outlets.

The deal gives Lowe’s just under a 20 percent stake in Sungevity, according to a solar industry source, though neither company would discuss specific dollar figures.

30 Lowe’s stores are scheduled to launch in California around July, customers will be able to access kiosks equipped with Sugevity’siQuote system, a Web-based application that allows homeowners to simply enter their address and receive a firm installation estimate within 24 hours, eliminating the expense of an on-site visit.

In addition to an installation estimate, customers can also get a visual rendering of their home with solar panels installed. And if interested parties provide information on typical power usage, such as an account number or past electric bills, the iQuote system can estimate potential savings expected from using the equipment.

The iQuote system can already be used online, and the company’s founder, Danny Kennedy, estimated that roughly 25,000 users had taken it for a test drive, though only about 1,500 of those had been converted to sales.

The deal with Lowe’s, Kennedy said, could help Sungevity — a petite player in the solar leasing market compared to bigger players like SolarCity of San Mateo, Calif., or San Francisco-based SunRun, which raised $200 million in financing earlier this month — significantly expand

Electric Highways In California?

by Daniya May 3rd, 2011 - No Comments »

A possibility to turn California’s outrageously busy highways into electricity generators is now closer than ever. A bill to conduct research into “piezoelectric generation,” has recently been approved by the Assembly Natural Resources Committee.

According to Assemblyman Mike Gatto, D-Los Angeles, who introduced the bill, embedding transducers into highways could yield as much as 44 megawatts per year per six-tenths of a mile. That could provide power for more than 30,000 homes annually.

Sensors built into the roadways would convert the vibratory energy from passing cars and trucks into electricity, which could be used in nearby neighborhoods or for lights along the roadway.

The bill still has to pass a few more reviews to even make it to the floor for a vote.
