Crop Circles In The Snow?

by michael February 22nd, 2012 - No Comments »

It’s amazing how people create art these days. Several posts ago, I covered an artist that strapped LED lights to sheep then strategically herded them to perform a light show.  It’s amazing how art has transformed not only in technique but also in scale.

Recently, Sonja Hinrichsen’s and her 4 helpers created snow art. The task was simple, walk in patterns to create huge circles that resemble giant balls of yarn. The sheer size of this art is amazing and what’s more amazing is it only took 3 hours.

These snow crop cirlcles not only are creative but also sustainable. Artwork that uses nature has no ill side effects to the  environment. If more artist were to create work using the resources around them, recycled or in their backyard, a sustainable art movement would occur.

Who wants to be part of that movement? Living just minutes from the beach, I know I’m in.

Santa Monica Beaches Get Trash Can Facelift

by michael June 1st, 2011 - No Comments »

Santa Monica has been rated one of the best beach cities in the U.S. but like other popular destinations, littering is a problem. Santa Monica State Beach, City Hall and Heal the Bay have teamed up to solve this problem. 500 new trash cans are being designed combining traditional marketing ques and modern smartphone technology.

The new cans are covered with art and a new slogan that reads” Toes in the sand, trash in the can”. They also include Qr linking, which connects smartphone users to the Santa Monica Beachcast, in which they have access to tips to keep the beach clean, a chance to sign up for beach cleanups with Heal the Bay, the latest weather and water quality conditions, community Twitter updates and emergency contacts.

The coolest feature will be the ability to upload their photos of the beach, which will be used to encourage the community to keep the beach beautiful and clean. These three organizations just want to encourage a stronger sense of pride to the ocean.

No bike lane? Make your own!

by michael May 24th, 2011 - No Comments »

“Safety First” is a video art installation in Prague, not a solution to unfriendly bike cities. This isn’t the answer to every cyclists problem of sharing lanes with cars but, it’s still cool to watch artist Vladimir Turner (his partner in the project is Ondřej Mladý) turn the bike-lane-deficient streets of Prague into his personal cycling masterpeice.

This would be great for cyclist in cities like Los Angeles. The bike lane system we have here is far from perfect and we see countless accidents with cars. This would be a great safety feature to sell at bike shops in cities that need to be more bike friendly.

Less Trash = More Art

by Daniya January 24th, 2011 - No Comments »

“Sometimes beauty can be a call to action. Here the call to action is to follow some simple rules of planetary housekeeping, but in a larger sense, the call to action is to follow those strange voices of inspiration, of compulsion, for the real opposite of beauty is indifference…. Sometimes, it feels like the problems are just too big, insurmountable, but we each can begin right where we are with just one small stretch of beach, just one small place on this planet.” –Judith Selby Lang and Richard Lang

Judith Selby Lang and Richard Lang have collected huge quantities of  plastic trash from 1000 yards of Kehoe Beach along the Point Reyes National Seashore in California. Plastic junk is brought home, washed, sorted out, and is later transformed into expressive works of art.

By incorporating plastic waste in their art Judith and Richard are hoping to raise awareness of the overwhelming variety and ubiquity of plastic contamination and its irrevocable impact on our environment.

LACMA Goes Green!

by michael January 9th, 2011 - 1 Comment »

If you haven’t already checked it out, LACMA’s new BP Grand Entrance is worth visiting.

Designed by Renzo Piano, the structure is both stunning and functional. The Pavilion named after British Petroleum for their phase one fundraising just opened up recently and houses some awesome collections.

The building has a glass roof that allows natural light to come through so energy can be saved during the daytime.

BP also funded the solar panels that will be used on the structure for both BP and the LACMA West building.

With one of the biggest disasters in man kind, BP has to start funding more and more green projects like this, in order to live up to their flower shaped company logo and regain the public’s trust.
