Yosemite Park In California Goes Solar

by michael August 14th, 2011 - No Comments »

Several post ago; we talked about how Yosemite an initiative to trim some if its trees to improve its famous views. After that ordeal they have now modernized a bit and installed the largest solar panel array of all national parks.

This new system will supply over 10 percent of the parks power and has been mounted at several points in the park (not disturbing the beautiful views).

This huge install cost around four and half million dollars; however, the park will be saving fifty thousand dollars a year in energy and expects to see seven hundred thousand in rebates over the next five years.

It’s nice to see more and more parks and social areas incorporating solar energy into their businesses. It not only saves money and the environment, but it also sets a standard. As the general public sees more and more solar panels go up, they will soon follow. I predict in the future that houses will be coated in paint that will be able to absorb solar energy, making easy for anybody to have solar power.

Santa Monica Shares Bikes

by michael July 22nd, 2011 - No Comments »

Everyone knows that driving a couple blocks is never the best thing to do. Getting out and walking or biking is not only good for you but for the environment as well. Walking and Biking also saves you lots of money because it’s free!

Santa Monica recently paired with Global Green and tried out a system for bike sharing. This system has locations spread out through the city that you can either pick up or drop off bikes at. This a huge leap forward because it makes using a bike readily available to anyone.

The city of Santa Monica seems interested and companies are already making these systems, I know the Metro would be involved in the whole process as well, which would help out a lot. The whole idea seems to be very supported and hopefully this will be the alternative to zip cars. If put into play this will bring down emissions and meet new goals that Santa Monica has set for themselves.

Google Invests $280M Dollars In Solar Energy

by michael June 14th, 2011 - No Comments »

Today was a landmark for Google going “green”, with an investment of $280M dollars to fund solar panel installations around the United States. This is a huge milestone for solar energy, making it obtainable by the general public. Financing and leasing being made available will allow more people to afford sustainable energy without the big upfront costs.

This isn’t Google’s first time investing in clean energy though, after this deal, Google’s total investments into clean energy will hit a wallet busting $680M dollars. This joint venture with Solar City will definitely be the most expensive and will have the highest impact towards a cleaner future.

Sungevity,Lowe’s Cut Deal To Bring Solar To The Masses

by michael May 17th, 2011 - No Comments »

Sungevity a California-based solar leasing firm announced a deal on Monday with home improvement giant Lowe’s that could make obtaining a personalized estimate for installing solar panels a push-button affair at Lowe’s outlets.

The deal gives Lowe’s just under a 20 percent stake in Sungevity, according to a solar industry source, though neither company would discuss specific dollar figures.

30 Lowe’s stores are scheduled to launch in California around July, customers will be able to access kiosks equipped with Sugevity’siQuote system, a Web-based application that allows homeowners to simply enter their address and receive a firm installation estimate within 24 hours, eliminating the expense of an on-site visit.

In addition to an installation estimate, customers can also get a visual rendering of their home with solar panels installed. And if interested parties provide information on typical power usage, such as an account number or past electric bills, the iQuote system can estimate potential savings expected from using the equipment.

The iQuote system can already be used online, and the company’s founder, Danny Kennedy, estimated that roughly 25,000 users had taken it for a test drive, though only about 1,500 of those had been converted to sales.

The deal with Lowe’s, Kennedy said, could help Sungevity — a petite player in the solar leasing market compared to bigger players like SolarCity of San Mateo, Calif., or San Francisco-based SunRun, which raised $200 million in financing earlier this month — significantly expand

Solar energy is the way of the future. With the potential to power the planet with no emissions, it’s no wonder why they are being used to power everything from road signs to whole cities. It’s easy to see why governments are starting to fund solar projects and adopt this new energy.  Here in Santa Monica Solar Panels are everywhere, they power the ferris wheel on the iconic Santa Monica Pier and just recently, solar panels were installed to power the automated pay station in Essentia’s parking lot. Solar Superheros Wanted

by michael February 17th, 2011 - No Comments »

From solar transforming school performance in East Africa to creating hundreds of solar entrepreneurs in developing countries, the work of Solar Aid tackles development, clean energy and climate change at the same time. They’re also getting pretty creative in their fund raising efforts too. Their latest effort sees them recruiting real live superheroes who can fly bikes, meditate underwater, throw offgrid parties, and even make it rain in England. It’s impressive stuff.

The video below gives a flavor of just how creative the supporters of this London-based charity are getting. In an age of Facebook and Twitter, the notion of a simple sponsored fun run seems a little old—so turning the creativity over to your supporters and seeing what happens is a great way to shake things up a little.

The elite group of Hot 100 fundraisers will each aim to raise at least $1000 for the charity by any means they see fit, and they will be supported along the way with regular pub meet-ups and other networking opportunities. They’ll be motivated by the opportunity to win a trip to Africa too. Check out Solar Aid’s Hot 100 page for more details.

LACMA Goes Green!

by michael January 9th, 2011 - 1 Comment »

If you haven’t already checked it out, LACMA’s new BP Grand Entrance is worth visiting.

Designed by Renzo Piano, the structure is both stunning and functional. The Pavilion named after British Petroleum for their phase one fundraising just opened up recently and houses some awesome collections.

The building has a glass roof that allows natural light to come through so energy can be saved during the daytime.

BP also funded the solar panels that will be used on the structure for both BP and the LACMA West building.

With one of the biggest disasters in man kind, BP has to start funding more and more green projects like this, in order to live up to their flower shaped company logo and regain the public’s trust.
