Leo’s Got Karma

by michael July 16th, 2011 - No Comments »

It’s always nice to see celebrities take action for what they believe in. Some celebrities are against fur and animal testing, others try to help poverty-stricken areas and some are environmentalist.

There are lots of perks to being famous, one of which is money but more importantly, you’re known. Your face alone can sell people on things, that influence alone gives you immense power.  One of the biggest things I’ve seen here in Los Angeles is the Prius Effect. I don’t know what sparked it but lots of celebrities started buying Toyota Priuse’s and they became cool, now they’re everywhere.

This trend has started up again with Leonardo DiCaprio, he will be one of the first to have a Fisker Karma, the electric sports cars. Cars like these are great, it’s amazing that people are swapping out their twelve cylinder Lamborghinis for EV’s like the Tesla Roadster and Fisker Karma.

In my opinion these cars are the revolution for electric vehicles. You have to make something appealing in order to make it popular and with cars its all about the styling and performance.

100% Recycled 7Up Bottle

by michael July 15th, 2011 - No Comments »

Everyone knows that using plastic bottles is unsustainable. Plastic is one of the hardest things to recycle because there are so many different types and it doesn’t biodegrade. Pepsi is helping solve this problem by creating the first 100 percent recycled soda bottle.

This bottle will be made completely out of recycled plastic and will drastically change the impact of their 7up lines emissions. This EcoGreen bottle will be launched in Canada for the 7up line only.

If the bottle is a hit, you will probably see Pepsi implement this technology into all of their other bottled products.  Next time you go to the market keep a lookout for the  EcoGreen Tag !

1,000,000 Prius’s On US Soil

by michael April 6th, 2011 - No Comments »

In 2008, Toyota announced that it had reached 1 million worldwide sales of its Prius hybrid. Then in 2010 it reached 2 million sales around the world, today Toyota announced that 1 million Prius’s have been sold in the U.S. alone. It’t no wonder why where ever you go you will always see a Prius. Here in Santa Monica, you cant see more then 10 cars without one being a Prius, thats probably why Toyota has filmed there most recent commercials in Santa Monica.

Prius’s have saved Americans around  881 million gallons of gas, $2.19 billion in fuel costs, and 12.4 million tons of CO2 emissions, when compared to the average car. We cant wait for the new hybrid and plug-in arrivals Toyota is set to release.

The Incident At Tower 37

by michael March 22nd, 2011 - No Comments »

Chris Perry, who worked at Pixar for many years, created an incredible animated short that aired to day, for World Water Day. Titled The Incident at Tower 37, the film tells the story of a company that is siphoning off all the water from a pristine lake, until they figure out that they’re ruining an ecosystem — and the message comes from a rather extraordinary hero.

Perry States “Humans exploit the natural world, harnessing it selfishly for their own use. Tower 37 is about the natural world fighting back… The film tells the story of one person’s transition from ignorance to awareness. Tragically, it happens too late to save them. But it shows we have the capacity to understand our broader impact on the world and, ultimately, do something about it. My personal hope is that we all recognize the ticking clock and act responsibly sooner rather than later.”

Solar Superheros Wanted

by michael February 17th, 2011 - No Comments »

From solar transforming school performance in East Africa to creating hundreds of solar entrepreneurs in developing countries, the work of Solar Aid tackles development, clean energy and climate change at the same time. They’re also getting pretty creative in their fund raising efforts too. Their latest effort sees them recruiting real live superheroes who can fly bikes, meditate underwater, throw offgrid parties, and even make it rain in England. It’s impressive stuff.

The video below gives a flavor of just how creative the supporters of this London-based charity are getting. In an age of Facebook and Twitter, the notion of a simple sponsored fun run seems a little old—so turning the creativity over to your supporters and seeing what happens is a great way to shake things up a little.

The elite group of Hot 100 fundraisers will each aim to raise at least $1000 for the charity by any means they see fit, and they will be supported along the way with regular pub meet-ups and other networking opportunities. They’ll be motivated by the opportunity to win a trip to Africa too. Check out Solar Aid’s Hot 100 page for more details.

Ahead of the Curve; Shark Finning Ban is Proposed In California

by Daniya February 15th, 2011 - No Comments »

Less than a week after Chinese New Year, California legislators have introduced a bill to ban the possession, sale and distribution of shark fins used in a traditional Chinese soup.

Every year tens of millions of sharks die a slow death because of finning. It is the inhumane practice of hacking off the shark’s fins and throwing its back into the sea, mutilated and still alive. The sharks either starve to death or eaten alive by other fish.

Since the 1970s the populations of several species have been decimated by over 95%.

We are rapidly degrading the ecosystem by removing a keystone species. A ban is the right thing to do in order to help maintain a healthy balance and stop this inhumane practice.
