UPS Is Switching To Biodiesel

by Daniya May 26th, 2011 - No Comments »

UPS has recently installed a biodiesel fuel tank and fueling station at the Worldport facility in Louisville, KY.

“There is a finite amount of petroleum-based fuel available from our planet so it is important that UPS and other companies invest in ways to use alternative fuels and technologies, including biodiesel. This project helps us reduce our dependence on fossil fuels with the added benefit that it will also reduce air pollution and carbon emissions,” said Scott Wicker, UPS Chief sustainability Officer.

Given the gargantuan size of this facility and the amount of packages that are processed here daily this swap is indeed of colossal significance.

by Daniya May 2nd, 2011 - No Comments »

Finally, there is an electric car that doesn’t only look shockingly good but can also perform on par with traditional racing cars. Designed by an automobile giant Peugeot, this the 100% electric beauty is powered by a pair of electric motors, one on each axle, thus offering four-wheel drive. Each electric motor produces 125 kW (170HP) for a combined output of 340HP and 240Nm (177 lb-ft) of torque. Energy comes from a high-output lithium-ion battery pack.

First debuted at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, the EX1 has already broken six world records. The most recent one was set at the Nurburgring racetrack in Germany, where the existing record for 12 mile run was exceeded by 50 seconds.

EPA’s Energy Star Rates LA On Top

by Daniya March 18th, 2011 - No Comments »

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released a list of U.S. metropolitan areas with the greatest number of energy-efficient buildings that earned EPA’s Energy Star certification in 2010.

EPA debuted its list of cities with the most Energy Star certified buildings in 2008. Los Angeles remains in first place for the third year; the District of Columbia and San Francisco hold second and third respectively for the second year; and Detroit and Sacramento are new to the top ten. New York City climbed five spots to claim fifth in the rankings and California boasts more cities on EPA’s list than any other state in the country with a total of five.

With various federal stimulus grants expiring and most states mired in budget crises, it will be interesting to see if the rapid rise in energy efficient buildings continues in the years to come.

LA Takes A Spin

by Daniya March 3rd, 2011 - No Comments »

The Los Angeles City Council approved a new blueprint Tuesday for the city’s streets that shifts focus away from automobiles.

The bicycle master plan calls for the creation of 1,680 miles of interconnected bike lanes in the city where transport has been defined by the automobile for generations. Significantly, this is a network designed not for recreation, but for actual transportation.

The plan, which was created with significant input from the city’s well-organized bicycling community, would mean 100 miles per year of new lanes over each of the next five years, and 40 miles a year thereafter. Funding will come, in part, from a half-cent sales tax dedicated to transportation upgrades, overwhelmingly approved by Los Angeles County voters in 2008.

Way to go LA!!!
