VW Goes The Distance

by michael November 29th, 2011 - No Comments »

I’ve always been a fan of Volkswagen. They’ve always been able to produce cars for people who want Audi quality with a Corolla price tag.  They offer a line up that can fulfill anyone’s needs, from the sporty EOS to the fuel sipping Polo Blue Motion, VW has a car for you.

Recently, I was readying through a Motortrend magazine and noticed a write up on the new 2012 Passat TDI.  Now when it comes to fuel-efficient vehicles, my vote will always go to clean diesel. Aside from being easy to fill up, clean diesels don’t emit the same amount of EMR that EV’s do. EMR is Electromagnetic Radiation; this stuff has been known to cause serious health issues and the batteries used to power Electric Vehicles have thousands that you’re practically sitting on, which can’t be good for your offspring guys.

Now, the review from Motortrend went into a lot more detail then I will, but basically the new 2012 Passat emulates its big brother the Audi A6 in aesthetics, while getting 800 miles per tank, all for under twenty one grand.

Now if you want to go test one of these distance demons check out VW of Santa Monica!

Essentia Hosts Tesla Drive Event!

by michael September 14th, 2011 - No Comments »

Yesterday, Essentia Santa Monica had the pleasure of hosting one of Tesla’s Drive Events. They brought down one of their new Roadster Sports and were allowing prospective owners take it out for a spin. I had the pleasure of going out in it, if i could describe it in one word, it would be amazing. I’ve driven everything from Lotus’s to Porsches and nothing has the immediate gratification of speed like the Tesla.

The only way i can describe it, is like having a turbo kick in without the lag, you can unleash all the power you want at any speed or RPM without changing gear. The Tesla is a 1 geared car, it has one gear that revs like a motorcycle and the same gear is used for reverse just spun backwards. All in all it was an amazing machine and proves that you can have a beautiful sports car with 0 emissions.

EV Does Over 1000 Miles On Single Charge!

by michael August 16th, 2011 - No Comments »

With Gas prices hovering around 4 dollars a gallon in the U.S., the switch to a more fuel-efficient cars is becoming an inevitable future for most. The biggest problem that most people face when looking into electric cars is the range anxiety.

People don’t want to segue into electric powered cars because they don’t have the luxury of filling up where ever they want in 2 minutes. Most people don’t seem to understand that having a 100-mile range for daily driving is more then enough.

Just recently a prototype car was built with the intention of satisfying this range anxiety and successfully drove over 1000 miles on just a single charge. They car didn’t go very fast and wasn’t fitted with any luxurious features but it proved a very valid point, electric cars can go the distance.

With battery technology constantly improving, electric cars will be able to get a full charge in minutes and go distances that would put any internal combustion engine to shame.

Hybrids Will See Gridlock Soon

by michael June 29th, 2011 - No Comments »

California is now taking away the privilege of driving in the carpool lane from hybrid drivers. For the last 6 years Hybrids getting more then 45mpg, like the Toyota Prius and Honda Civic Hybrid, received a yellow sticker allowing them to hop in the carpool lane and bypass traffic. This used to be an added incentive for people who were considering a hybrid electric vehicle but now the standards are changing.

New regulations will only allow a select few to zip by the carpool lane. The lucky few will be plug-in electric vehicles like the much anticipated 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-In. These new electric all stars will now get a new Green decal to stick on their bumper to ride in the HOV lanes. Now that this incentive is gone, 85,000 hybrid drivers will join California’s gridlock traffic.

These drivers, who once laughed as they silently coasted by in peak traffic, will have to honk and wait with the best of the gas guzzlers. I suspect these new regulations will skyrocket any new plug-ins hitting the market in the next several years, especially in Los Angeles.

New Plug-In And It’s A Volvo !

by michael June 18th, 2011 - No Comments »

Volvo is coming out with an awesome new Plug in Hybrid called the v60 PHEV. This new Swedish wagon is set to hit the market next year or early 2013. Little is known about this car but one this is certain, it will have the safety and performance that Volvo is known for.

With a 0-60 time under 7 seconds and a sleek new design, I’m sure this new luxury hybrid will keep a lot of driveways warm and a lot of pumps lonely. It’s great to see Volvo reinvent themselves with a new lineup of cars and do what they do best; wagons.

5 Tricks To Improve Gas Mileage And Save

by michael May 30th, 2011 - No Comments »

With gas making its way to $5 dollars a gallon, squeezing all your money out of each drop is important. When you’re in a big city like Los Angeles, traffic is your enemy and using these tips will help you save. Chevrolet has recently conducted a test on driving patterns and gas mileage. They put two identical vehicles against each other with two different types of drivers.  The end result of their test was staggering, with an average savings of $100 dollars a month, drivers who drove smoothly saved, while while aggressive drivers lost. Here are the 5 gas saving tips:

1. Accelerate Smoothly, a heavy right foot will only take you to the pump faster.

2. Slow down and drive speed limit. Driving 10mph over the limit will burn an extra 4 miles per gallon.

3. Use Cruise Control, it makes the car accelerate and slow down smoother, keeping a steady pace allows for consistent fuel consumption.

4. Drive With Your Windows Up, driving is like a fish moving through water, the less resistance you have the easier it is to move. Having the windows down adds resistance and makes your car less slippery through the wind, making it more difficult to move.

5. Walk, if you want to go get your coffee around the corner, walk there. You will save money and improve your health in doing so.

by michael April 6th, 2011 - No Comments »

In 2008, Toyota announced that it had reached 1 million worldwide sales of its Prius hybrid. Then in 2010 it reached 2 million sales around the world, today Toyota announced that 1 million Prius’s have been sold in the U.S. alone. It’t no wonder why where ever you go you will always see a Prius. Here in Santa Monica, you cant see more then 10 cars without one being a Prius, thats probably why Toyota has filmed there most recent commercials in Santa Monica.

Prius’s have saved Americans around  881 million gallons of gas, $2.19 billion in fuel costs, and 12.4 million tons of CO2 emissions, when compared to the average car. We cant wait for the new hybrid and plug-in arrivals Toyota is set to release.

You have to watch this new Chevy Volt Commercial. It takes a leap from tradition electric car advertising and really packs the punch when demonstrating innovation. I don’t want to ruin the good bits of the commercial but,  if you have been around for several decades, it will really shine light on how far we have come in technology; the Chevy Volt being the next big step. Thank you GM for creating more then just another hybrid.

Prius Commercial shot in Santa Monica!

by michael January 19th, 2011 - No Comments »

For the 10-Year Prius Anniversary Celebration, Toyota decided to thank their loyal Prius owners with impromptu carwashes.

They took to the Santa Monica streets bright and early with a car washing crew and two Prius Plug-ins. Once they washed the cars, with minimal water and eco-friendly soaps of course, they were off scouting for our next drive-by. With loads of Prius owners in Santa Monica, it wasn’t hard for the Toyota Team to spot them. Owners gladly celebrated with the crew by receiving a free car wash.

Essentia was lucky enough to have a Prius parked out front when they washed one of the cars. At 47 seconds the blue Prius is outside of our store, but only for a quick second. We at the Santa Monica store were lucky enough to also check out the two Prius Plug-Ins they had, which get 100+mpg!!
