Will Your Next House Be PreFab?

by michael December 5th, 2011 - No Comments »

I am a huge advocate of modular or Pre- Fabricated homes. They not only look great but, they use less materials and can be assembled in a fraction of the time it takes to build a traditional home. I’ve always loved contemporary architecture and livinghomes.net, a prefab house website, seamlessly pairs design and function together.

I’ve stumbled upon the website livinghomes several times, each time digging a little deeper into the site and actually designing and pricing out my future dream house.  The cool thing about livinghomes is that a lot of the materials used are green and the house can be up to LEED standards, both in the building process and function.

All the designs on the website are fresh, combining contemporary design with green materials. The website has 11 designs to choose from and even offers the option to design your own place. My favorite is the RK4, take a look around and see which designs you like. If you want to dig even deeper into design ideas you can check out the website DigsDigs.com, who offer design options for any project you have.

Loews Santa Monica Goes Green!

by michael September 7th, 2011 - No Comments »

Most people don’t think about sustainability when it comes to hotels. Hotels are short stay places where everything is just thrown away after they’re used. Some hotels are better then others, hotels with LEED Certifications or Green Business certificates go out of their way to reduce their carbon footprints.

The Loews Hotel in Santa Monica is no exception, they have just received their Green Business Certification for going above and beyond in their sustainable practices. They have done everything from use low VOC paint to green building materials.

On top of all of this, they also donate their excess food to charities. Their participation in food recycling programs not only makes them more sustainable for recycling food, but also helps people in need and gives back to the community.

If you’re in the LA area, be sure to stop by the Loews Hotel for some food or a drink, you cant miss it, it’s the gorgeous beachfront hotel that’s a stones throw away from the iconic Santa Monica Pier.

Sharks Invade Socal Coast

by michael September 2nd, 2011 - No Comments »

There aren’t too many people that are immune to sharks. Here in California we don’t normally have problems with sharks but it seems like recently some Great Whites have been poking around. With surfers in the water everyday and children playing on the beach, people are raising an eyebrow to pictures like the one above.

Sighting like these bring up the question, when is it necessary to step in and push wildlife away? These sharks have obviously been drawn here by something. Maybe it’s because we’ve polluted the earth so much that these sharks have had to migrate with their food to a warmer climate.

With effects being seen all over, from the earthquake in Washington to the hurricanes on the East Coast, one may say we have brought this on ourselves. As we destroy more and more habitats, we will have to suffer the consequences and share our space with more and more wildlife.

Bamboo Bike, Amazing Design!(video)

by michael August 29th, 2011 - No Comments »

With gas prices on the rise more and more people are turning to alternative forms of transportation. Bikes seem to be the most popular choice, offering both health benefits and cost efficiency.

New bike designs come out everyday, one surpassing the last in their appeal and function. The one limitation on bikes is the materials they are made of, using metal, plastic and rubber as the fundamental building blocks.

Now you can throw that all out the window with this new bamboo bike design. Created by Alexander Vittouris, the “ Ajiro” is a bamboo-framed masterpiece providing speed, comfort and style all sustainably. The whole skeleton of this bike is pure bamboo, which is extremely strong, durable and in abundance.

Here in Santa Monica, bikes are hip and people would rather hop on a cruiser than in their car. If these bamboo bikes were made readily available here, they wouldn’t be able to stay in the showroom.

Santa Monica Celebrates 30 Years of Farmer’s Markets

by michael July 31st, 2011 - No Comments »

Santa Monica just celebrated its 30th year of hosting farmers markets. These markets serve over 900,000 people each year, providing them with fresh, locally grown food.

Today Main Street in Santa Monica had their Farmers Market right after the Main St. parade. It all started back in 1981, when the city of Santa Monica wanted to introduce its residents to organic, local food. Today the markets thrive, selling everything from flowers to grass fed beef.

The Farmer’s Markets around Santa Monica fall on different days, each one having their own delicious offerings. You can visit the Santa Monica City website to see the dates and times: http://www.smgov.net/portals/farmersmarket/.
