Crop Circles In The Snow?

by michael February 22nd, 2012 - No Comments »

It’s amazing how people create art these days. Several posts ago, I covered an artist that strapped LED lights to sheep then strategically herded them to perform a light show.  It’s amazing how art has transformed not only in technique but also in scale.

Recently, Sonja Hinrichsen’s and her 4 helpers created snow art. The task was simple, walk in patterns to create huge circles that resemble giant balls of yarn. The sheer size of this art is amazing and what’s more amazing is it only took 3 hours.

These snow crop cirlcles not only are creative but also sustainable. Artwork that uses nature has no ill side effects to the  environment. If more artist were to create work using the resources around them, recycled or in their backyard, a sustainable art movement would occur.

Who wants to be part of that movement? Living just minutes from the beach, I know I’m in.

New Planet Discovered!

by michael September 16th, 2011 - No Comments »

NASA recently discovered a new planet about 200 light years away from earth. The planet named Kepler-16b is very unique in that is orbits 2 suns. Anyone that has seen “Star Wars” knows that this kind of scenario happened on Tatooine as Luke Skywalker watched a double sunset.

The planet was discovered by the Keplar aircraft, which was launched back in 2009 to search for life in the depths of space. The discovery of Keplar-16b was among just one of the accomplishments this aircraft has achieved. Although the planet is un-habitable, there is still hope to discover more habitable planets in the future.

Scientists are continuing to explore space looking for a planet that could support life and possibly be deemed a second earth. As our planet is getting eroded away by unsustainable habits, we will soon need another place to call home while earth heals.

Loews Santa Monica Goes Green!

by michael September 7th, 2011 - No Comments »

Most people don’t think about sustainability when it comes to hotels. Hotels are short stay places where everything is just thrown away after they’re used. Some hotels are better then others, hotels with LEED Certifications or Green Business certificates go out of their way to reduce their carbon footprints.

The Loews Hotel in Santa Monica is no exception, they have just received their Green Business Certification for going above and beyond in their sustainable practices. They have done everything from use low VOC paint to green building materials.

On top of all of this, they also donate their excess food to charities. Their participation in food recycling programs not only makes them more sustainable for recycling food, but also helps people in need and gives back to the community.

If you’re in the LA area, be sure to stop by the Loews Hotel for some food or a drink, you cant miss it, it’s the gorgeous beachfront hotel that’s a stones throw away from the iconic Santa Monica Pier.
