Microsoft Is Saving Trees

by Daniya April 20th, 2011 - No Comments »

Microsoft has taken a great environmental initiative and announced its headquarters are switching to 100% post-consumer recycled paper.

To implement the idea, Microsoft teamed up with Grays Bruce Harbor Paper, a company that designed a line of 100% post-consumer recycled paper called Harbor 100, which is also Green-e certified. It’s not only the resource that makes this product sustainable but also the process used to produce it. It involves no chlorine, and is powered by energy created using wood waste gathered in a sustainable way from the forest floor.

In addition to the 8,000 trees projected to be saved annually as a result of Microsoft’s contract, the paper company anticipates it will also reduce wastewater by as much as five Olympic-sized swimming pools and solid waste by eight garbage truckloads.

Inspired by their example, we, at Essentia Store in Santa Monica, decided to do our part and swap to 100% post consumer recycled paper. Although the significance as well as the volume of the produced effect might fade by comparison, we believe that every little bit counts. And we are determined to do anything in our power to move towards a more sustainable future.

Waterless ecoUrinal to Save Water

by Daniya April 2nd, 2011 - No Comments »

Using the bathroom is probably more wasteful then you think. Flushing water isn’t sustainable and wastes lots of water and energy.  Rubbermaid Commercial Products is releasing a new waterless bathroom product called the ecoUrinal which could save facilities an average of 40,000 gallons of water per year.

Saving water with urinals is no new idea, urinals themselves use very little water; howver, EcoUrinal has eliminated the need for water at all. This new innovation is a breakthrough in restroom sustainability. Moreover because no water is used, the need for flushing is removed. This allows the user to have less contact with the urinal and have cleaner bathroom experience.

The Rubbermaid ecoUrinal uses a unique enzyme cartridge that lasts 10 years and replaces standard urinal pucks. These enzyme tablets kill the odor, and also keep the drain lines clear. This is great, because this process eliminates the use of harsh chemical drain cleaners.

Learn more about how you can make your building even greener using Rubbermaid Commercial Products’ ecoUrinals in your washrooms by visiting their official site.

As the biggest fan of Costco’s seafood section, I was absolutely delighted to learn that this largest retail-sector purchaser of ocean delights in North America has recently agreed to adopt more sustainable seafood policy.

Costco has also confirmed discontinuation of 12 threatened species of fish including sea bass and swordfish.

By making a switch towards a more sustainable business practices huge corporations like Costco provide us with hope in solving the impending resource crises we are on the verge of today.
