One problem with the nature of blogs and news on the internet is that we are too obsessed with current news. We are only generally interested in a site if it is new. Yesterday, I found out about a site that is actually quite old by internet standards. Kevin Bacon took charge of the “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” pre-internet meme and produced a website called SixDegrees.org, which aims to show how individuals can help to change the planet based on very small actions.
The site allows you to donate or volunteer with over one million charities online. They also sell Good Cards, which can be given as gifts to friends and family. A Good Card allows the recipient to donate the money to the charity of their choice.
Kevin Bacon/Six Degrees also maintains a really fun Twitter account to follow, @SixDegreesofKB. His most recent tweets cover dating sites for volunteers and a WiFi donation alarm clock that automatically donates money to charity if you don’t wake up on time.
In the four years that the site has been around, it has seen over $3,000,000 worth of donations go through it. Obviously, when your last name is Bacon, it is incredibly easy to be awesome.
