California Sues Bush For Endangered Species Act Changes

by Angela January 2nd, 2009 - No Comments »

The state of California is suing the Bush administration in order to block last-minute changes it are trying to make in order to restrict the powers of the Endangered Species Act. Late Monday the Attorney General of California filed the suit in the US District Court in San Francisco.

One of the changes that tops the list as the most egregious is the fact that federal agencies can now issue permits for mining and logging without getting reviews from federal wildlife biologists. California has a special interest in protecting their wildlife, having 310 species on the endangered list and lots of natural resources that various corporate interests would love to tap without regard to wildlife. While Obama has promised to reverse the ruling, it could take some time to do so and the state lawsuit throws an additional kink in the works for Bush. You can read more about it over at CBS News.

One Last Kick at the Environment for Bush

by Angela December 13th, 2008 - No Comments »

When his plans to drill, baby, drill in scenic Utah canyons was foiled, Bush sat back and came up with something else to go out with a bang on.  He’s relaxing the Endangered Species Act.

New amendments to the act will reduce the input of federal scientists and keep the Act from being used to combat global warming.  This will effectively eliminate mandatory environmental reviews on major projects which construction and other federal agencies have long complained are unnecessary.  More details here.

Obama will seek to overturn the new amendments using the Congressional Review Act.

Bush’s Final Push May Harm Environment

by Angela November 6th, 2008 - No Comments »

Recent proposals that the Bush administration is looking to rubber-stamp in the last few months of the Bush presidency from the Department of the Interior are an assault on environmental resources in the US.  They include:

  • Changes to the Endangered Species Act, reducing numbers of scientific reviews of projects from the US Fish and Wildlife service and disallowing the ESA from being used to prevent climate change.
  • New Management Plans for 11 Million Acres in Utah, including freeing up 9 million acres for oil and gas development.
  • Effort to revoke congressional commitee’s emergency powers to protect public lands, which would prevent measures like this summer’s use of the rule to protect lands around the Grand Canyon from uranium mining.
  • Repealing regulations that keep mining companies from dumping in streams.
