EPA Regs Demand 800 Million Gallons of Biodiesel by 2011

by freshfuzz July 17th, 2010 - No Comments »

First off, we are relieved and happy today that the Deepwater Horizon oil well has been capped successfully by BP. While the circumstances leading up to and after the disaster were lamentable, environmentalists and people on the Gulf Coast can now all breathe just a little easier, even if much more analysis and reevalution of deepwater oil drilling has to be done before the world can put this issue to bed.

Moving on, the EPA has called for 800 Million gallons of commerical use US diesel to be comprised of biodiesel by next year. Biodiesel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 86% when compared with petroleum diesel. The regulations exist under the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) which was put in place with the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007.

The National Biodiesel Board and other environmental groups are applauding the requirements. “This notice demonstrates to all actors in the fuels marketplace that the volume goals for Biomass-based Diesel provided for by law in the RFS2 program will be met and that 800 million gallons of biodiesel must be used in 2011,” stated Manning Feraci, the vice-president in charge of Federal Affairs for the US Biodiesel Board.

Quebec Company Turns Leftovers into Fuel

by freshfuzz February 28th, 2010 - No Comments »

Companies that recycle wood or other materials generally only use materials that meet certain criteria; the rest go in the garbage. Quebec company Enerkem takes these trash materials and turns them into ethanol, chemicals, and other materials. They have been successful enough to attract the attention of giant company Waste Management Inc., who have strategically invested in Enerkem in order to take advantage of their technology.

Instead of incinerating trash like most people do, Enerkem’s process requires no combustion or smokestack. Enerkem is based out of Montreal, with facilities operating in Quebec, Edmonton, and a new one planned in the US.

Calculating The Real Cost of Biofuels; Science Says they Aren’t Green

by freshfuzz October 23rd, 2009 - No Comments »

New studies in the October 22 issue of Science show beyond the shadow of a doubt that biofuels are far from being green.

The first study, led by Jerry Melillo of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA, showed that greenhouse gas emissions would rise, not fall, with increased use of biofuels over the coming century. In the second study, researchers led by Tim Searchinger of Princeton University exposed a flaw in the calculation of the way that carbon emissions are calculated from biofuels under the Kyoto Protocol. The overwhelming message of both studies seems to be that global warming will be accelerated, not halted, with use of the new fuels.
