How is Eating Organic still a Damn Debate?

by Jason November 18th, 2009 - 4 Comments »

bullshit

This is a follow up to our Penn and Teller’s Bullshit Post about organic food.

How is eating or not eating organic still debatable? It comes down to the informed vs the non-informed.

Organic is important in so many respects.
- Not genetically modified
- Better Taste for most produce
- Better for your body (Pesticide free etc)
- Healthy work environment for field workers
- Helps maintain biodiversity
- Keeps family farms in business
- Better for the environment

I didn’t want anything to do with organic 3 years ago..then i started reading. I now eat organic.

Read up on companies like Monsanto, Cargil, BASF, Bayer, Bunge. If you don’t want to do the research watch youtube videos on the subject. Here’s one about Monsanto

We spend less on food than ever in history. An egg does not cost 18 cents unless it’s a genetically modified chicken, grown in a cage, fed genetically modified grain and pumped with hormones and antibiotics. The same group of companies grow your beef, fruits an veggies. They also make medications to treat cancer caused by their foods and their chemical fire retardants now found in your mattress, couch, computer, carpet etc which they lobbied to have MANDATORY.

I don’t want to put ANY money in their pockets. That’s why i eat organic.

Lobbyists are über powerful. Just recently a New York Times article revealed that “Statements by more than a dozen lawmakers were ghostwritten, in whole or in part, by Washington lobbyists working for Genentech”. Genentech, a subsidiary of the Swiss drug giant Roche, estimates that 42 House members picked up some of its talking points — 22 Republicans and 20 Democrats, an unusual bipartisan coup for lobbyists.”

obamaObama ain’t going to save you either as he just nominated pesticide executive to be chief agricultural negotiator in the Office of the US Trade Representative.

Obama also appointed former Monsanto shill Tom Vilsack as USDA Chief. So Obama is not on our side when it comes to the food we eat.

Not eating organic is the equivalent of voting for everything that’s wrong. Anyone who can afford to eat organic should. It’s the only way to take back our food and integrity.

Oilsands on the Agenda for Obama’s Canada Visit

by freshfuzz February 19th, 2009 - No Comments »

Canadians and Americans both are glued to their computers and TV sets this morning to see Barack Obama’s first official state visit.  The oilsands are an important component of the discussions that may take place today between Obama and Canadian leaders.  Prime Minister Stephen Harper happens to be from Alberta where oilsands oil production is a driving force in the Canadian economy.  The US gets 13% of its oil from the Albertan oilsands.  The process by which the oilsands are mined are environmentally problematic.

In an interview Tuesday with the Canadian national news service, CBC, Obama stated:  “What we know is that oil sands creates a big carbon footprint. So the dilemma that Canada faces, the United States faces, and China and the entire world faces is how do we obtain the energy that we need to grow our economies in a way that is not rapidly accelerating climate change.”

The environmental cost of extracting oil from the Albertan tar sands is three times as high as extracting a “regular” barrel of oil.  The oilsands operations were not even economically viable due to this costly extraction process until oil prices started holding steady at higher prices in the 1990′s.  Alberta’s forests and rivers are not just threatened by oilsands extraction, but are suffering right now.  What Harper is hoping is that the political cost of purchasing oil from the Middle East outweighs the environmental cost of extracting the oil.  Hopefully Obama’s visit will result in tighter environmental controls on the oilsands operations.

The following video is a comprehensive look at Albertan oilsand operations.

How Obama is Good for Green

by freshfuzz November 4th, 2008 - No Comments »

Besides the obvious fact that Dems aren’t chanting “drill, baby, drill” at their rallies, there are many other reasons that environmentalists in the US and all over the world should be crossing their fingers for an Obama White House tonight.

  • Obama has called for a cap-and-trade arrangement to reduce carbon emissions by 80% by 2050, compared to McCain’s 60% cut through no stated scheme at all.
  • McCain has attempted to obfuscate the issue of the environment and global warming whenever he is asked a direct question about it.
  • Obama will invest $150 Billion in clean technology, opposed to McCain’s $2 Billion pledge for clean coal only.
  • Offshore drilling is McCain’s answer to energy independence rather than investment in green technologies.

With Obama, the US won’t be a stumping factor in a worldwide clean energy deal – they will be the spearhead that moves such a deal forward.  With McCain, our earth and children stand to lose.
